It is at the top of a sheer dropoff. Notes from Military Roster: "Stephens Home Guards" Howell, C. A. -- Private - March 1, 1862. Wounded in left thigh, date not given. Surrendered, Appomattox, Virginia April 9, 1865. (Born in Taliaferro County, Georgia September 1838.), NOTES: Clitus A. Howell was born in either 1839 or 1840 in Taliaferro County, Georgia. The 1850 US Census listed Clitus A. Howell along with Parmelia (Dunham) Howell, Reloreen Ann Howell, Mary C. Howell, Joseph M. Howell, Sarah Howell, Thomas J. Howell, Edward T. Howell, Texana Howell, and Martha Howell in the household of Abram R. Howell in Div. 78, Fam 246, Taliaferro County, Georgia. The official date for this census was June 1, 1850. Clitus A. Howell served the Confederate States in the military. He enlisted as a private on 1 Mar 1862. He was wounded in the left thigh, date unknown, and surrendered at Appomattox, Virginia, 9 Apr 1865. Clitus A. Howell received a Confederate pension for his service during the Civil War . He served in Company D, 15th Georgia Regiment. He filed in Taliaferro County, Georgia. J. H.
