Jesse Mercer Sarah Hervey died Oct. 11, 1814 aged 8 yr, 7 mo, & 4 days This site is located approximately 200 yards south of Georgia Highway 44 and about 60 yards east of Little River and the Greene County Line. There were two huge hickory or chestnut trees here but one was cut years ago and the other fell or was cut in the not too distant past. The following is an excerpt from R. L. Robinson's History of the Georgia Baptist Association, pages 48 49: "Rev. Jesse Mercer has a child buried on the east bank of the (Little) river and about five miles east of Bethesda. The inscription on the tombstone bears the date December 15, 1814, and the stone is erected to the 'Memory of the Miriam Mercers', both of his children having been called by that name and one of them having died in Virginia Close beside the grave of his child on the bank of Little River is another stone inscribed to the memory of an eight year old child, Sarah Hervey; but of the relationship between the families, if any, we have no record."
