Gee ================================ Addendums from Terri Saturday tlsaturday@nu-z.net Singleton Harris became the fifth sheriff for Taliaferro County on April 16, 1835 1856. The Singleton and Mariah Harris family was one of the first listed for the City of Crawfordville; closest neighbor was the William Stewart Family. Charles William Gee was Sheriff of Taliaferro County in the years 1854 -1858. Charles was also appointed as the clerk of Superior Court on February 16, 1864. Charles acquired the mercantile business of the Empire Store in Crawfordville in the 1900s. This business was later sold to our cousin Warren Portwood, then to Rem’s sister Vashti. Another famous resident - Joseph Davis Hammack (1822- 1899) married first on September 30, 1846 to Mary Elizabeth Wilson. After Mary’s death he married on February 03, 1883 to Julia A Harris (1829- 1900). He became a member of the Mason Dawson Lodge 67, Crawfordville, Taliaferro Co., and Tax commissioner on 1- 11 -1854 and elected Clerk of Inferior Court, Superior Court and Ordinary Judge on 2-16-1864. During this time Judge Hammock became controller of the Taliaferro County Treasury until his death in 1899. His children were: Sally Silbert and Ella from his first marriage. His remaining children followed with Katie Linton, Mamie and William F. Hammack from his marriage with Julia. The Judge was named one of the oldest living citizens when he described a small office; the oldest building standing on the rear lot of the Mercer Lot in Crawfordville discovered before 1899. His son William F. had a joint ownership with Mr. Cicero Lucas. They were doing a nice business in which they kept and saved the best portion of their jewelry and other valuables during the fire of 1889 that swept the town. William F. Hammack continued his father’s legacy when he became Clerk of Superior Court on 1- 8- 1887.
