Darracott enlisted in the CSA as private on May 5, 1862. He served in Company B, Capt. James M. Griffin’s Company, 55 Regiment Georgia Infantry. A pay roll slip shows that on July 5, 1862, he was paid $50. A Company Muster Roll shows he was present during November and December 1862, and another Muster Roll, undated, shows he was absent due to illness. He was discharged on Feb. 8, 1863, “by virtue of a substitute in the person of J. N. Channel.” Additional Comments: John W. Darracott was born about 1830, Newton Co., GA, died August 23, 1887, Taliaferro Co., and is buried in Crawfordville Cemetery. He was son of James B. Darracott and Tabitha Conner. Although born in Newton County, he lived most of his life in Taliaferro County where he was at one time a farmer, and later a well known merchant in Crawfordville. He was married May 26, 1853, Taliaferro Co., to Susan Ann Chapman, daughter of William H. Chapman and Ann Connell.
