J. C. RHODES KILLED BY BROTHER-IN-LAW Mr. J. C. Rhodes was shot and almost instantly killed last Thursday evening by Mr. Albert Taylor, his brother-in-law. The killing occurred at the home of Mr. W. R. Taylor in Greene county, where Mr. Albert Taylor makes his home. A coroner's inquest was held Thursday night and the verdict of the jury was that the killing was justifiable. The evidence showed that Mr. Taylor shot in self defense, Mr. Rhodes having attempted to shoot him. The killing is very much deplored by a host of friends on both sides. Mr. Rhodes was one of the best known and most highly esteemed citizens of Taliaferro county. He was a very progressive and successful farmer, and was a leader in the community. He numbered his friends by his acquaintances, and his untimely death has caused much sadness throughout the county. Mr. Taylor is also well known and highly esteemed in this county, although he makes his home in Greene. Mr. Rhodes was laid to rest in the Margaret's Grove cemetery Thursday afternoon, after funeral services conducted by Rev. M. J. Bruce. Of the immediate family he is survived by his wife and seven children and several brothers and sisters all of whom have the sympathy of everyone in their bereavement. Additional Comments: John Courtney Rhodes, Sr., born Oct. 3, 1875, Taliaferro Co., GA, died 23 Aug. 1917, Taliaferro Co, son of Reuben B. Rhodes and Letitia Courtney. Married Dec. 9, 1896, Taliaferro Co., to Mary Ruth Taylor born Oct. 20, 1877, Taliaferro Co., died Nov. 16, 1957, Taliaferro Co., daughter of William R. Taylor and Roberta Moore. Both buried at Margaret's Grove Cemetery, Taliaferro Co. GA. Albert Taylor was born 1887, died 1970 and was brother of Ruth Taylor, wife of John Courtney Rhodes. He married January 12, 1913 to Annie Ruby Taylor, daughter of William Chesley Taylor and Sarah Elizabeth Darracott. (Ruby was sister of my father, John Alonzo "Lonnie" Taylor.) Albert Taylor is buried at Margaret's Grove and although we think Aunt Ruby is buried in Crawfordville, there is no marker. Aunt Ruby was deceased well before the date of the shooting.
