BIRD The sad news of the sudden death of Mr. Joseph Buford Bird on last sunday afternoon cast a pall of sorrow over Crawfordville and other places where he was well known and loved. His health had not been up to par recently, and he had entered the Boswell Hospital at Greensboro for a check-up which was expected to last only a few days. The end came suddenly and unexpectedly on Sunday afternoon Sept. 22, 1957. He had been a valuable and capable employee of the Georgia Railroad for nearly fifty years, during most of which time he had served as telegraph operator at various stations. He had been stationed at Union Point since 1941. He was highly esteemed by his employers and fellow workers as was indicated by the large number of members of the Order of Railroad Telegraphers who came to pay their last respects to him on Wednesday afternoon. Joseph Buford Bird was born in Taliaferro County on April 13, 1886, the son of the late William Wiley Bird and Katie L. Hammack, both of whom descended from prominent and influential families of Taliaferro County. He was united in marriage to Miss Carrie Brake on July 27, 1909*. His wife, also a descendant of highly respected forebears, preceded him in death. Funeral rites were held at 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon in the Presbyterian Church at Crawfordville of which he was a member for many years and were conducted by Rev. G. C. Grissom, Pastor of the Presbyterian Church, assisted by Rev. L. C. Cowart, Pastor of the Methodist Church, Crawfordville. Interment was in the Crawfordville Cemetery. The pallbearers were W. H. Dozier, P. G. Mitchell, Jr., Paul Ellington, Jr., H. G. Moore, Jr., George Nelms and Tom McGee. The following members of the Order of Railroad Telegraphers and Trainmen served as an honorary escort: Cecil Cobb of Warthen, B. J. Wilson of Boneville, E. R. Caldwell, G. B. Hardy, H. P. Campbell, W. W. Darden, of Union Point, C. M. Reese and W. J. Mayes of Camak, J. M. Reynolds of Greensboro, R. C. Pirkle and J. M. Morgan of Covington, Grady Hendrix and J. H. Hendry of Washington, H. B. Morgan and H. G. Acree of Atlanta, Geo. W. Hendry, J. R. Evans and H. V. Beazley, all of Crawfordville. Survivors are four daughters, Mrs. T. V. Akins, Raceland, Ky., Mrs. J. W. Leaphart, Charleston Heights, S.C., Mrs. A. W. McLaren, Clinton, Ind., and Miss Josie Bird, Crawfordville, Ga.; and one son, W. G. Bird, Crawfordville, Ga. In addition to the children there are eight grandchildren, and one great- grandchild. The surviving sisters are Miss Mamie Bird, Crawfordville, Mrs. Julia Bird Paschal, Lykesland, SC, Mrs. G. L. Slocumb, Macon, surviving brothers are Dr. Frank Bird, Lake Park, Ga., Paul Bird, Atlanta and Gwin Bird, Atlanta.
