RITES FOR J. A. TAYLOR John Alonzo Taylor, 74, of Alameda, Calif., died in a veterans hospital in Oakland, Calif., from pneumonia on Thursday, may 16th following an illness of three weeks. He was 74 years of age, having been born in Taliaferro County on March 27, 1889. He was the son of the late W.C. (Chat) Taylor and the late Sallie Darracott Taylor, both of Taliaferro county. While working in Missouri, Mr. Taylor married the former Miss Audrey Rhodes, of Corder, Mo., on December 25, 1921. As a young man he learned the printing trade in the office of the Advocate-Democrat in Crawfordville. He worked in various newspaper shops in Georgia and the west. As a youth he began his apprenticeship in the printing trade under the late Clem G. Moore. He was associated with The Herald-Journal on different occasions the last time being from 1944 to 1950. Upon occasion Mr. Taylor was editor of his own newspaper in Missouri and Iowa. He was editor and publisher of the Advocate-Democrat in 1937 and 1938. Mr. Taylor was a member of the American Legion, having served in the army during World War I. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church. Mr. Taylor was well posted and interested in current affairs and political questions. He was an admirer of the late U.S. Senator James Reed of Missouri, and Mr. Taylor received a number of personal letters from the Missouri statesman. When he was in Georgia, Mr. Taylor was an admirer and personal acquaintance of former Governor E.D. Rivers. He was a charter member of the Crawfordville Lions Club that was organized in 1938 and operated a few years previous to forming the local Kiwanis Club. Funeral services were held in the National Cemetery in San Francisco, Calif. Tuesday. He is survived by his wife who resides at 729-C Pacific Ave., Alameda, Calif., one son, John A. Taylor, Jr. of Independence, Mo., Mrs. Betty Lou Martinson of Concord, Calif., and Mrs. Rhoda Fone, of Portland, Oregon; and nine grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Roy Lunsford and Mrs. Myrtice Rhodes, of Crawfordville and Mrs. J.R. Rider, of Washington, Ga.
