J.F. HOLDEN DIED THURSDAY MORNING Sincere and genuine sorrow followed the announcement of the death of Mr. John F. Holden, which occurred at his residence in Crawfordville early Thursday morning. Although Mr. Holden had been in declining health for several years and for the past several days his condition had been critical and it was known that the end was near, his death was nevertheless a severe shock to his family and friends. Mr. Holden was one of the best known men in this section of the state. He was widely known in business circles having until a few years ago been the head of a chain of banks in this and surrounding counties. He was interested in many business ventures, and also operated a large number of farms. He was very successful in his business ventures, and accumulated a large fortune. However, the depression of the last few years has been a heavy drain on his financial resources, and a large part of his fortune was wiped out before his death. He was twice State Senator from the Nineteenth senatorial district. He was elected to serve the district in 1915 and 1916, and again in 1927 and 1928. He served in the senate with courage and fidelity, and made many friends in the legislature whose respect and esteem he continued to enjoy after retiring to private life. Following the death of his brother, Mr. W.O. Holden, in 1919, he was Mayor of Crawfordville for several terms. He was first elected Mayor to fill the vacancy caused by the death of his brother, who was Mayor at the time of his death. His administration as Mayor was progressive and successful, and his voluntary retirement caused much regret among the citizens of the town. He never sought other public office, although he was often importuned by his many friends to become a candidate for Representative as well as other offices. Mr. Holden, who was a bachelor was 72 years old. He is survived by his two brothers, Judge Horace M. Holden, of Atlanta, and Mr. Claude Holden, of Haines City, Fla., and one sister, Miss Stella Holden, of Atlanta. Also a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives. Although funeral arrangements had not been definitely completed with The Advocate-Democrat went to press Thursday afternoon, interment will take place today in the Crawfordville cemetery. It is expected that an unusually large crowd will attend the services, as Mr. Holden was widely known throughout this section of the state and enjoyed the friendship of thousands of people. The Advocate-Democrat joins the host of friends in extending to the bereaved family and relatives its sincere and heartfelt sympathy in their sorrow.
