John D. Rhodes, son of John Rhodes, Esq. of Taliaferro County, Ga. was born on the 18th of March 1856 and died on the 16th of October 1878. From early youth he displayed a great amiability of disposition; and while quite young gave his attention to the subject of religion. On the 12th of August 1872 he was baptized by the Rev LRL Jennings into the fellowship of the Crawfordville Baptist Church. Shortly thereafter, he having professed a desire to labor in the work of the ministry, was encouraged by his brethren and authorized by his church, to exercise his gifts with a view of fitting himself for greater usefulness; it was his purpose to pursue a course of study in our Theological Seminary, but his failing health compelled him to forego. He labored, however, with all the zeal and earnestness that his increasing feebleness would permit, and though his life was short it was filled with good works. Having married Miss Sallie E. Pilcher, of Warren Co., he settled in the neighborhood of Elim, to which church he transferred his membership and preached for them one sabbath in each month, till too feeble to render the service. His suffering was long and sometimes severe, but he bore with that all that firm faith and patient resignation which deprives death of its terrors. His surviving widow and the little boy who God gave him, his parents and a large host of relatives, have abundant reasons furnished by his life and death to sorrow not as those who have no hope. "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord." Additional Comments: John D. Rhodes was the son of John Rhodes Jr. and Cornelia Mildred Gunn of Taliaferro County. John D. Rhodes and Sallie Pilcher had a son named James Pilcher Rhodes.
