Elizabeth Darracott, newly married to William A. Cunningham, and daughter of James B. Darracott, had inherited a considerable estate from her maternal grandfather, William Mason, in Louisiana. In order for Mr. Cunningham to claim this estate, proof of their marriage in Taliaferro Co., GA was required by the Ouachita Parish Court. Many thanks to my good friend Mary Gregg for the copy of the handwritten document from which I transcribed the following.) Wm. A. Cunningham Marriage To Elizabeth C. Darricott Georgia Taliaferro County. To any Minister of the Gospel Judge Justice of the Inferior Court or Justice of the Peace to Celebrate these are to authorize and permit you to join in the Honorable State of Matrimony – William A. Cunningham of the one part and Miss Elizabeth C. Darricott of the other part according to the rights of your church provided there be no lawful cause to obstruck the same and this shall be your authority for so doing. Given under my [missing] as Clerk of the Court of Ordinary for the County aforesaid, This 2nd day of February 1839. Quiana O’Neal CCO. I hereby certify that William A. Cunningham and Miss Elizabeth C. Darricott joined together in the Holy Bonds of matrimony by me this 2nd day of February 1839 – William M. Harrison JP in Georgia Taliaferro County. I Quiana O’Neal Clerk of the Court of Ordinary in and for said County to whom by the Laws of our State rightfully belongs the granting and recording after [ ? ] of Execution thereof of marriage license do hereby Certify the above and foregoing is a true copy from the Records in my office and I do further Certify that the said Elizabeth C. Darricott is the identicle Elizabeth C. Darricott for whom one James B. Darricott of said County was before her said Marriage appointed guardian. Anderson one of the Justices of the Inferior Court of said County and by virtue thereof by the Laws of said State one of the Justices of the Court of Ordinary of said County – Do hereby certify that Quiana O’Neal is the Clerk of said Court and that his signature as such on the foregoing page is genuine and that full faith and credit ought to be given to it as Such and that his foregoing certificate under the seal of said Court is in due form of Law. Anderson one of the Justices of the Inferior Court of said County as stated in my foregoing certificate do hereby also state that I am personally well acquainted with Mr. William A. Cunningham of said County who has intermarried with Miss Elizabeth C. Darracott of the same place and that there may be no difficulty or doubt as to his personal identity I state to all whom it may concern and to whom these presents may come being born by him that he is of small stature about five feet five inches high rather dark complected and dark coloured hair and blue eyes and usually wears a large full pair of whiskers &c. &c. Anderson whose certificates and attestation is given and made to the within document was at the time of making the same holding and exercising the foregoing office of Justice of the Inferior Court of the County of Taliaferro and State of Georgia aforesaid and by virtue thereof one of the Justices of the Court of Ordinary of said County wherefore all due faith credit and authority are and ought to be had and given to his attestation as such. Done at the Capitol in Milledgeville this Twelfth day of November in the year of our Lord eighteen Hundred and thirty nine and of the Independence of the United States of America the fourth By the Governor. Lamy Parish Judge and Ex officio Notary Public in and for said Parish and State came and appeared William A. Cunningham and James B. Darricott residents of the State of Georgia and the said Wm. A. Cunningham declare that he is same person mentioned in the within Certificate and that he was duly married to Miss Elizabeth C. Darricott daughter of Mr. James B. Darricott and grand daughter of William Mason decd on the 2nd day of February 1839 according to the terms and as set forth in the within Certificate and the said James B. Darricott declared and acknowledged that the above and foregoing are true and correct. In faith whereof the said parties have hereto signed their names in presence of Squire W. McLure and Robert F. McGuire Subscribing witnesses who have also signed with the parties in my presence and me the said Judge. In testimony whereof I have hereto signed my name and affixed my seal office this 9th of May 1840 (signed W.A. Cunningham, J. B. Darricott, S W McLure, R. F. McGuire, Lewis F. Lamy, Parish Judge.
