HOWELL Taliaferro County, Georgia Will Record A, page 93. Georgia, Taliaferro County The last will and testament of Matthew C. Howell late of Taliaferro County decd. – In the following words – Item 1st. I give unto MY BELOVED WIFE SARAH M. HOWELL all the property that I received on account of my intermarriage with her. Item 2nd. I give unto MY BELOVED CHILDREN, SAMUEL ARMSTRONG HOWELL and MARY JANE HOWELL all the remaining part of my Estate. Item 3rd. It is my will that my present growing crop of all kinds be sold and applied to the payment of my just debts. Item 4th. It is my wish that WILLIAM JOHNSON be guardian for my two children Samuel Armstrong Howell, and Mary Jane Howell – and I do appoint William Johnson guardian to my aforesaid named Children. [no signature] In presence of William Johnson Jesse Oneal Albert A. Simonton James V. Grier This 18th day of August 1834 Georgia, Taliaferro County Personally appeared Jesse Oneal, Albert A. Simonton and James V. Grier in open Court and on oath said that the within writing contains the last will and testament of Matthew C. Howell and that they were present at the making of the said will, and the testator at the time of pronouncing the same did bid them to bear witness that it was his will and also that it was in the time of the last sickness of the deceased, and in his own dwelling house – and that he was of sound disposing mind and memory. Howell was born ca. 1807, Greene Co., GA, d. 1834, Taliaferro Co. GA, son of McKinney Howell and Mary Johnson. He was married March 31, 1831, Greene Co., GA to Sarah M. Simonton. Sarah died August 14, 1855 (her tombstone shows her “Aged 41 years 7 months 17days”). Children: 1. Samuel Armstrong Howell, b. Oct. 22, 1832, died September 30, 1864 (tombstone inscription). Married Dec. 16, 1856, Macon Co., Alabama, to Georgia A. Eley (Macon Co., AL Marriage Records). Georgia was born Aug. 21, 1833, died June 20, 1915, Greene Co. (tombstone inscription). Although the 1850 census for Macon Co., AL shows her born GA, all subsequent census records list her place of birth as Alabama. After the death of Samuel A. Howell, his widow Georgia remarried May 4, 1868, Greene Co., to Anderson C. Moore. Anderson was born Dec. 10, 1844, died June 16, 1884 (tombstone inscription), son of William W. Moore and Margaret Veazey of Greene Co. All are buried at White Plains Cemetery. 2. Mary Jane Howell, born May 22, 1834, died June 15, 1869 (tombstone inscription). Married January 15, 1852, to Dr. Isaac D. Moore (Greene Co., GA Marriage Records). Both buried White Plains Cemetery, Greene Co. Isaac D. Moore was born Nov. 14, 1828, died June 23, 1910 (tombstone inscription). After the death of Mary Jane, Dr. Moore remarried on Nov. 4, 1869, Greene Co., to Mary Elizabeth Eley, born Dec. 20, 1848, died Jan. 8, 1935 (tombstone inscription), also buried at White Plains.
