In the name of God, Amen. Selah Rhodes being of feeble body but of sound mind and memory knowing that it is appointed for all persons to die, and believing that the time is fast approaching for my exit – I request to be buried in a decent Christian like manner and after that it is my wish that what I have of this worlds goods should be disposed of in the following manner. Item 1st. I give and bequeath TO MY SON WILIE RHODES two feather beds and furniture and one large chest and four choice sitting chairs and also I leave my son Wiley Rhodes the money I have in hand and what notes I have due me. Item 2nd. It is my will that MY SON REDDEN RHODES shall have the remainder of my house hold and kitchen furniture except one small pot __ider and trunk which I give TO MY DAUGHTER RUTH TAYLOR. Item 3rd. I give and bequeath TO SALLY RHODES one spinning wheel. Item 4th. I give and bequeath TO MY GRANDDAUGHTER LEVICY McGINTY one spinning wheel also – and I leave MY SON JOHN RHODES my Executor to carry my last will and testament into effect – Subscribed this 23rd day of December 1834. /s/ Selah (her X mark) [Seal] In presence of Mary (her X mark) K. Harrison Chesley Bristow Georgia, Taliaferro County – Chesley Bristow you swear that you saw Selah Rhodes sign seal publish and declare this writing to be and contain her last will and testament – That at the time thereof she was of sound disposing mind and memory and that she did it freely without compulsion to the best of your knowledge, and that you saw Mary K. Harrison subscribe the same as a witness with yourself so help you God. /s/ Chesley Bristow State of Georgia, Taliaferro County – In open Court came John Rhodes the Executor named in the within will and was duly sworn to execute the same. Additional Comments: Selah Rhodes is sometimes seen as Celia Rhodes. She was widow of Benjamin Rhodes who was deceased by 1820 and his estate records can be found in Wilkes Co., GA. Although we think all of Benjamin's children were by Selah/Celia, she did not name all in her will. Children (not necessarily in order of birth) were: 1. John Rhodes, b. ca. 1794, GA, d. ca. 1867 in Taliaferro Co. Married July 20, 1818, Wilkes Co., to Nancy McGinty. 2. Allen Rhodes, d. ca. 1846. Married Nov. 30, 1810, Wilkes Co., to Jemima Rhodes. 3. Redden Rhodes, b. ca. 1800, GA, d. August 21, 1849, Taliaferro Co. Married June 1, 1826, Taliaferro Co., to Sarah Harrison. 4. William Rhodes, b. ca. 1802, GA, d. after 1880, Taliaferro Co. Married (1) December 10, 1820, Greene Co., to Emily "Millie" Evans; (2) December 24, 1848, Taliaferro Co., to Nancy Moore; and (3) November 23, 1854, Taliaferro Co., to Mrs. Martha J. Evans. 5. Martha Rhodes, d. before 1834. Married February 14, 1822, Wilkes Co., to William M. Harrison. 6. Sarah Rhodes, married October 9, 1825, Wilkes Co., to Thomas Edwards. 7. Ruth (Rutha) Rhodes, b. ca. 1807, d. between 1850-1860. Married January 1, 1823, Wilkes Co., to Albert R. Taylor. 8. Wiley Rhodes, b. ca. 1811. Married December 18, 1840, Greene Co., to Margaret Mitchell. Further information on Benjamin Rhodes, and his children and their spouses, will be provided at a later time.
