Durrence was born in Screven County Georgia in 1784 when it was still Burke County. Screven County was formed from Burke County in 1793. He was a member of Brewton Methodist Church in Hagan, Georgia. Jesse Durrence was a Captain in the Tenth Division (Tattnall Co.), Second Brigade, First Division, Georgia Militia. He was stationed at Fort James on Milligan's Bluff, Paines Bluff on the Altamaha River two Miles above the mouth of Beards Creek for the protection of the frontier against Indian attack. He was discharged March 10, 1814. Captain, Tattnall Co, September 11, 1820- August 29, 1823. Jesse was married twice, and was also involved with Charlotte Sikes. There was a case against him in Tattnall County for this affair. According to transcribed Inferior Court Minutes of Tattnall County, they were presented for "living in a state of adultery and fornication on the first of June 1826. Witnesses: John Sikes, David Benton, and Shadrack Douglas." Of the 18 members of the jury, two had somewhat of a connection--Edward Kennedy later married Charlotte and they had ten children, and Joseph Durrence was a brother of Jesse. His first wife was Rebecca DeLoach, daughter of Hardy DeLoach, Sr., of Edgefield County, South Carolina. His second wife was Elizabeth Sands, daughter of John Sands of Tattnall County, Georgia. In the 1801 Tax Digest of Tattnall County Jesse owned 2,300 acres of land. In 1804 he owned 3,250 acres. In 1828 Jesse owned 3452 acres. The Tax Digest also shows that he paid taxes on two carriages. The 1820 Census shows that Jesse owned 16 slaves. His home was approximately six miles south of Claxton , Ga., about one mile east of Highway 301. Jesse's first wife died between 1810 and 1820. There were seven children listed in the census prior to his marriage to Elizabeth in 1820. Jesse and Elizabeth also had seven children.
