His father was Simon Smith a revolutionary soldier and his mother was Frances BELL, daughter of Nathan BELL. Frances was born in Brunswick County, NC. James and Nancy were married about 1800. Children of James and Frances (Bell) SMITH were: 1. Alexander born 1801, married-Louisa Strickland 2. Henry Allen born 1802, married Keziah Mattox 3. Simon Peter born 1806, married Clarisa Brewton 4. Mary Ann born 1811, married Samuel Brewton 5. John C. born 1812, married Mary Jones 6. Elizabeth born 1815, married Moses Hammock 7. Rebecca born 1820, married 1st John Mattox, 2nd Robert Odum 8. James Bell born 1823, m. 1st Georgia Ann Sikes, 2nd Mrs. Rachel Tippins James and his family lived in Screven County until about 1803, then moved to Tattnall County. He owned a large successful plantation in Tattnall. James died in Tattnall County in 1841.
