Neal, Jr., and Charles Zoucks. The church at Sand Hill was organized officially as Mount Pleasant Methodist Episcopal Church. The land was bought August 14, 1875 from J.H. Bolton. He previously lived in Screven County, Georgia, where he was a member of Wesleyanna Methodist Church. Mr. Bolton gave a deed to four acres of pine land in consideration of five dollars. The trustees of the church at that time were John Jenkins, A.J. Wells, William N. Moon, Edward Weathers, and A.M. Johnson. The deed is recorded in Tattnall County Deed Book O, page 27. The name Sand Hill was derived from the sandy knoll on which it was located. The people wanted to worship God together, but did not have a church building in which to worship. They worshiped under the beautiful Live Oak trees until they were able to erect a church building. The trees are now listed by the American Forestry Association in their inventory of historic trees. The church and cemetery are still referred to as Sand Hill. Early church officials included members of the Wells, Jenkins, Moon, Weathers, Lewis, Herrington, Salter, Roach, Johnson, Bolton and Entrekin families. After a few years the Boltons returned to Screven County and Wesleyanna Methodist Church. Sand Hill Church and Wesleyanna had close ties and usually had the same pastor. Rev. Emory F. Dean of Folkston, Georgia, served as pastor of the church longer than any other minister. He was first mentioned in church records as pastor on September 23, 1876. Other early ministers mentioned were Rev. John Jenkins who died in 1885, and Rev., John W. Roach who was licensed to preach on December 28, 1895. The Rev. J. Loy Scott was pastor of Sand Hill Church at the time Camp Stewart acquired the property. Title to the church and cemetery was transferred to the federal government on November 27, 1942. Historical Marker at Entrance to Cemetery Mount Pleasant Methodist Church The church located nearby known locally as Sandhill was organized as Mount Pleasant M. E.
