Moses was given the duty to prepare a circular. I think the next listed is it.] An Address Dearly Beloved Brethren Through the indulgence of a wise and merciful parent, we met at Little Canoochie meeting house on the 20th and 21st of October 1815 to deliberate on the expendiency of forming a new Association. Sensible of our own weakness, we trust we may say we sought direction from the Father of Light, who seemed to smile on our attempts, manifesting his pleasure by disposing the minds of *senchal* from sister churches to express their willingness and intentions to unite with us, the number of which our minutes will show. Therefore having confidence in the never failing mercies of God, we rejoice at the willingness of our sister churches to unite with us [missing] laudable an attempt with every expression of gratitude to them for the honor conferred on us by the appointments of these excellent brethren through who they made known to us their wishes. Emboldened through the mutual pledges of our sister churches, we have acted as our minutes will show. Beloved brethren, we are aware of the many conjectures which may provoke those who may hear of the constitution of this association. At the same time, we can assure that we have no motives but such as are laudable. The only reasonable objection however, can be made in our want of a sufficient number of men of abilities and experience to conduct this business. We trust our Heavenly Father will supply the first and time will form the latter; and should we be so fortunate as to obtain the aid of the wise and the million friends of the learned and experienced pen, we shall have every thing to hope [for] and nothing to fear. Therefore brethren, live in peace, and the God of love and peace shall be with you. By your strict obedience to the divine commands you will provide to yourselves a much more frequency of the divine presence so that your affection will be drawn often in thanksgiving to his holy name; and much of his presence in your churches to the conversion perhaps of your sons and daughters, friends and neighbors; then may you expect to grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour; you will then strengthen the engagements of your ministers, your brethren will then love you. God will manifest himself as your friend by the frequent visitations of his Holy Spirit, thus will you be prepared to live joyful and die happy, leaving behind your pious and Godly life; for the God of love and peace shall be with you. But brethren, should you give vent to clamours and quarrels, evil surmizings, corrupt disputations - OH! Father of Mercies, what will follow? Desertion of the spirit - leaningness of soul and darkness of mind; then you will live unhappy as under this hidings of Gods face, you will then give the enemy of souls an advantage who may occasion you to lay stumbling blocks in the way of your sons and daughters, friends and neighbors; you will then weaken the engagements of your minister and give the enemies of the Lord cause for blasphemy or speak reproachfully. But brethren, we are persuaded better things of you though we thus speak; may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you and all that love his appearance. Brother Bates prayed. Art 6th Brother Westberry presented rules of decorum for the government of this Association, which were read and approved. Art 7th At the request of brother Westberry, the constitution of this Association was read. It was thought proper to make an addition clause to the sixth article limiting the delegates from each church not to exceed three. Page 2 [It seems a page is missing as it continues in mid-stride. This speech was probably titled "Discovery of Pride." The right margin of the page is missing. Please remember that puncuation marks were also usually obliterated in the filming and copying.] After we have attempted the discovery of which we shall ______ Short of giving a full account of all the evils to which ___ productive. Should we however be so fortunate as to [save] our dear brethren from the indulgence of a crime ______ to the honor of God; and incompatible with the gospel of the Lord and Saviour; we shall then be gainers and our _____ ? meet with a recompence of reward. But should our efforts prove ineffective and you, dear brethren, be _____ to sustain all the evils which might arise from the [discovery] of pride, will the fault then be ours? But should _____ be followers of God as dear children, will you not ______ be the gainer? Therefore , dear brethren, we shall [bring ] your attention to some remarks on the discovery of [pride.] It discovers itself in a brother when reproof or admonishment has a tendency to offend him {though it be done in the spirit of love and meekness}, which easily may be des/dis __ from either his countenance or expression. Again it discovers itself in a brother when he attempts to engage the whole conversation. It is discoverable in comp___ when they seem to be somewhat. It moreover discovers itself when an attempt is made to rival in the devotion of prayer by multiplying swelling words; and again it discovers itself in unnecessary dress. It discovers itself in shapes when a brother is treated with slight or with a distant formality, merely on account of his weakness or because he is poor. Furthermore, it discovers itself in members of the gospel when they attempt to lord it over Gods Heritage, or when they strive more to show their gifts than to gain souls or feed the flock of God; or when he makes illiberal remarks on the weakness slips on part of any brother. We have now laid before you, brethren, some remarks about the discovery of pride. We proceed to take some notice of it's evils. And first, as it respects those who are offended when reproved { though done in the spirit of love}, his countenance becomes distorted, his words harsh and his spirit inflamed. He is far from receiving the Christian like efforts of his brethren to save him from evil. Then the Godly brothers soul is wounded. AH!, he laments, mourns. But he is constanced to desist his brotherly efforts--Even his brothers contentions are as the strong bars of a cage. Therefore, instead of his giving satisfaction or promise amendment, he watches over his brethren for NR and not for good. Therefore there necessarily follows a decay of fellowship until at length {if not removed} a final declension of the same takes place. But brethren, this ought not so to be in Zion; remember thy brothers obligations to watch over thee for the good that he might instrumentally save thee from the multitude of fault; and that thy soul may be preserved in the day of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Secondly: As it respects those who are forward in conversation, such as are common amongst brethren; such persons seem to wish a _____ then of their penetration, a desire to make a display of their ability; or in controversy they strive to engross the whole of the conversation, which is offensive to every judicious ear. But dear brethren, we exhort you to be swift to hear how to speak and be more ready to hear, than to offer the sacrifice of fools; and may the Lord of Heaven dispose your minds to humility. More ever brethren, when in conference, be not too forward, but ever remember you are then in one of the Lords courts. Therefore, act with humility and sobriety and may the Lord grant unto you an understanding heart. Thirdly: We say of those who are wont to rival in prayer by multiplying swelling words; dear brethren, take heed to yourselves that you approach not the throne of grace with the view to show your gifts, lest in so doing you displease the King of Heaven and procure to yourselves a curse instead of a blessing; for he is not pleased with the multitude of words not yet with fluency of speech; but with sincerity of heart. And may the Lord help those in this __ an important duty and that thou mayest act with wisdom and prudence; and that you may be cautious of multiplying expenses in unnecessary dress. Fourthly: We would that those who are so far lost to sense or thoughts as to slight , neglect or treat with a distant formality a brother merely on account of his weakness, poverty or misfortunes, to think again and well consider what they have to boast of; and if on examination they should discover to possess talents, riches or honor, let them again consider from whom they received them and be thankful for them and make a wise improvement of them to the gladness of God; and be careful to feed the hungry and clothe the naked; be not high minded, but fair. Then may the God of Zion say unto you, insomuch as you have done unto the least of mine, you have done it well. And may you obtain grace to perform and receive the rewards that follow. Fifthly: We most earnestly recommend our brethren of the ministry to preach the gospel in it's simplicity and in it's wisdom that man teacheth, and in so doing will have a twofold probability of usefulness, for the learned as well as the illiterate will understand and profit thusly. Then may you expect to gain souls to the ______ to the ______ mild? scripts of the King of Zion; and sermons would not be delivered in vain to the unbelieving part of the community. Therefore brethren, [allow] us to address you in this letter on a few words on the general evils of pride. It often produces angry contentions and unnecessary disputations. It splits asunder churches and _____lays them extinct, occasions divisions between NR of the Gospel; producing coldness of affection and of mind, and desertion of Gods spirit; but with ___ing party spirits to the wounding of the m_____ of all causes. It plunges nations in war, and spreading desolation in it's course, the field is covered with blood and carnage. It brings bailiffs to the door to collect debts contracted by the indulgence of pride; to the wasting of the state*, destroying of property and adding to this [are] children plunged into a most indignant circumstance; with the life of reputation or credit amongst [men]. It oftens destroys health, producing various kinds of disorders, but this happens more frequently among the rich who indulge themselves because they possess wealth; therefore pride [causes] them to intensify NR. Therefore we will close this letter by saying NR that pride , of all others, the most dangerous fault, prevails from want of sense or want of thought; Farewell.
