Name is hard to read – it could be Shelby or Schley. If Schley, there was a John Schley in 1850 in Richmond County. He was a lawyer and old enough to have been practicing in this case. Richmond County was also the seat of the superior court serving Tattnall. There was also a John Shly in Jefferson County, which is just to the west, in the 1820 census – no idea his profession.
