Lain Jamison Kennedy Thomas Grace …ghters Buckhalter [Comment: I was able to find all but Buckhalter, Lain and Sonthurll in the 1850 census.] [Comment: Elam Sapp later committed murder – he murdered two black men and was sent to jail. He was released from jail to serve in the CSA in place of Robert Collins. He was captured, then released after the war. Nothing was heard from him again though it is suspected he moved to Florida.] in the name and behalf of the citizens of Georgia, charge and accuse Elam Sapp of the County and State aforesaid, with the offense of Misdemeanor. For that the said Elam Sapp, being a married man on the first day of February in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and fifty two, in the County of Tatnall aforesaid, and …. other days and time, before and after that day and previous to the making of the presentment on which this bill of indictment is ….., did there another (and on said other days and times) commit devious acts of adultery by cohabitating and having sexual intercourse with one negro woman slave name “Sal” the property then and there of one John Cowart; and the said Elam Sapp then and there on said first mentioned day and year and on said other days and times did lie together with the said negro woman slave in said county [Comment: I was not able to find a “Sal” or a “Sul” in the 1850 slave schedule. But I did find where John Coward (and Coward and Cowart were often interchanged in the early 1800’s in Tattnall county. Coward owned 2 female slaves – one 13 and one 32. Given that Elam was 30 at the time, my guess the salve in question would have been the 13 year old.] contrary to the laws of said State, the good order, peace and dignity thereof.
