This is the arrest warrant. It’s interesting that one of comments on the warrant is from Clinch County – a long way from Tattnall (at least in 1857). Clinch borders on Florida. ] State warrant For Elam Sapp Georgia Tattnall County} To any lawful officer of said county to execute and return. Sworn under my hand and seal this Sept third 1857. JP {LS} ------------- Georgia Clinch County} To any lawful officer to execute and turn. Given under my hand and official signature September 26th 1857. J C Kirkland J.P. [Comment: Per the history of Clinch county, John Cobb Kirkland was elected clerk of the superior court in 1850. He was elected justice of the peace in 1854 and again in 1857.] ---------- I have this day arrested the within named Elam Sapp who is now in my custody September 26th 1857. Joel C. Griffis Const [Comment: There is a Joel Griffis in the 1860 census in Clinch. He’s a farmer.] ----------- [Comment: There are a number of words in the warrant that are hard to read. My best guess is done and I have no idea what the word means. But I don’t think this omission detracts from the overall intent of the document.] State of Georgia Tattnall County} To all Singulan.. the Sheriffs and Constables of said County to Execute and Return whereas Anson G. McCall hath this day made affidavit before me that one Elam Sapp of said County did on about the Seventeenth day of March last 1857 made and signed a cinten affidavit which affidavit so made and signed and published or caused to be published is false and malicious and purgeny in every particular in which the said appanent Elam Sapped charged Anson G. McCall, John Coward, William Coward, John Salter and others with having held munnel lodges at the house of said John Coward in said County and that …. writing in the form of a affidavit is false purgeny and preys a warrant to issue for said Elam. … are theirfore to command you for the right to arrest the said Elam Sapp and bring him beffore me to be delt with as the law directs. Given under my hand and seal this 11th of September 1857. [Comment: There is a Philip P. Hodges in the 1860 census for Tattnall. He’s 30 years old and a farmer.
