The two began to court one another and fell in love quickly. He was sent to this farm after the civil war. Sarah's first husband was Wash's best friend but he was killed during the war. He is not listed in the 1860 census, George Washington Saturday enlisted in the 61st Regiment Georgia Infantry. He was a private on August 31, 1861. He was single when he enlisted and he served the entire war. He was wounded three times and was captured at Spotsylvania, VA. May 12, 1864. He fought in many of the major battles. He was in Co. B, 61st Infantry, Georgia C.S.A. from Tattnall County. His war records say he 5'11" black hair, grey eyes and dark complexion. He was paroled at Elmira, NY. and sent to James River for exchange March 2, 1865. After the war he married his best friends wife and conceived one son. Sarah passed away a year later. In grief George met and wed his second wife Martha. George and his second wife Martha lived in present day Pine grove Church Community. We descend from George and his first wife Sarah Holland Green. HE married the widow Sarah September 17, 1865 in Tattnall County, GA. I would love to hear from anyone that descends from George Washington Saturday.
