Edwards M.D. =========== Maxine Turner (The list of Children of Aretus and Martha does not mention Willie Rigsby who died in 1900 and is buried with her parents and sisters and their husbands at Butler Bethel. Numerous Rigsbys are also buried near Viola Hill in Ellaville. The Martha, wife of a Wilson, is in error. Martha (February 7, 1901-April 18,1990) was the daughter of John and Mittie Thompson Turner; she married to Edward Brown Wilson in 1934; a WWI veteran, he died April 26, 1966. Both are buried in Butler Memorial Cemetery) **** Aretus "Reet" Turner gave each of his children two lots of land and sold land to some families in southern Taylor Co., including the Coopers. It was said that he owned much of the land from the Red Level to the Schley County Line. Immediately south of the John Turner place was the land of Mary Brewer on the east of Hwy 19, Willie Rigsby had land on the west wide of Hwy 19; at the top of Whitewater Hill on 19 was 100 acres inherited by John's sons Mack on the east and Eustace on the west(that land later owned by Mr. Howard Mott). Aretus's house was at Whitewater where he had a Mill. He received the post as postmaster at Rupert, then at Whitwater, where the mail was brought by horseback from Butler. A shed room in his house contained mail boxes. Mittie Thompson, later his daughter-in-law, did the work of post mistress, not only sorting mail but also reading mail to the patrons, writing their dictated letters, or "backing"/addressing envelopes for patrons. She continued to do such work for a small fee for many years until the general population became more literate. She had learned to read and write from Her father John kept school not only at Rhodes Academy but at a school just down the hill and to the south of Mt. Pisgah Church in the Cross Roads Community. Aretus lent money to people but would not take a note, saying that if a man's word was not good his signature would not be good. Attorneys Col. Bob and Col. Coley Foy got their start with money borrowed from Aretus, who kept his money in a little trunk under the bed. Aretus went AWOL from his unit in the Civil War because he was not paid. In once instance, his unit was marching close to his home on Whitewater and he ran into his house saying to his wife, "Martha, cook me a hoe cake." She did and he rushed away, burning his side because he put the hoe cake inside his shirt. Aretus Turner, Jr. took his share of the estate in cash and went to Savannah. This after an incident at Rhodes's Academy, a one-teacher school on land donated by Mr. Mott on Whitewater Hill. As teacher, he became angry one day and whipped every child in the school, including his younger sisters. When he got home that afternoon, Aretus Sr. whipped him, so he left home. His son Elmore moved north to Cincinatti and made a great success in the paint business. Both Aretus and Martha died at the home of their daughter Laura Hamm on a farm adjoining the north boundary of his son John's home on the Red Level, 4 miles so. of Butler. After the death of Aretus in November, his bereaved widow paced the floor and called for Reet until her death some weeks later in December. ============ Amanda lived in Washington County, Georgia, where members of the Beall family had migrated. The Beall family traces back to Ninian Beall who migrated to Maryland in the late 1600's or early 1700's (can't remember which right off hand), was prominent in Prince Georges County, Maryland, and built a townhouse that was owned in the 1960's by Jackie Kennedy David Hollis Brewer ============== Amanda's father was James Edward Beall, son of Nathaniel Beall, who was son of Jacob Beall. Amanda was a daughter of James Edward Beall and Elizabeth Woodham. Other children of that marriage were: Jesse, Dunreath, James Edward, Jr, Elizabeth, Helena, Mercem. Amanda's mother died in 1822. James married Linda Woodham, sister of Elizabeth. From this marriage came Sophia, Sallie, Everett and Mark. Amanda Adeline Beall ws born 29 December 1820, and died 29 June 1896. Amanda and Septimus Lemuel Brewer were married May 3, 1838, either in Jasper County or Monroe County. There were 13 children of this marriage: James Henry, Jessie L.,--both of these sons died during the Civil War; William Stevens; Thomas Edward, Georgia A., Mary A., Sallie E., Virginia F., Joseph Everett, John Walker, Ben Hill, Anna E., and Ella E. The home site for this family was locate in Taylor County, Butler, Georgia. This is rather basic, but might answer some questions. If any further questions, please contact me at email address.
