His parents were Robert Ewing Brown and Amelia Elizabeth Welsman. James's maternal grandfather, James Welsman was a very wealthy merchant in Charleston, and the Brown family was prominent there as well. During the Civil War James was in Co. C, 2nd SC Artillery Reg't, CSA. He entered service as a Capt.and by war's end was a Lt. Col. On Feb. 8, 1866, James married Sarah Nephew Davis in Columbus, GA. He began making land transactions in GA, and by 1870 was living in the Reynolds District of Taylor Co., GA. He bought an undivided half of a Georgia plantation called 'Magnolia Bluff' located on the Flint River four miles from Reynolds in Taylor County. He bought this property in 1865. (per Researcher:Beth May 1999) The children of James and Sarah were: Matilda Louise, b. Feb. 11, 1867; mar. E. S. Cleland Amelia Catherine, b. Dec 26, 1868 Sarah Davis Brown, b. Apr. 3, 1871 Robert Ewing Brown, b. June 13, 1873 Elizabeth Welsman, b. Jul 18, 1875, d. Jan.15, 1966, Glynn Co., GA; mar. George E. Atwood Marie Schley, b. Mar 10, 1878; d. April 1, 1947, Ware Co., GA James's wife, Sarah, is supposed to have died in 1878 when Marie was three months old. The date of James's death is unknown. Census for 1880 finds him in Cobb County - no Sarah, but all of the children plus his sister, Amelia Catherine age 38. James was a farmer in the 898th Militia Dist which is Marietta. No estate values were listed on the entire page. Cobb Co. Marr. Index Oct. 1880 between a James Weisman Brown and a Lutie A. Nutting. James Welsman Brown died May 31, 1887 in Atlanta, Ga. and is buried in Oakland cemetery in Atlanta. His first wife, my g-grandmother, Sarah Nephew Davis died March 9, 1879 in Marietta. His second wife, Lutie Amelia Nutting raised the children. They are all buried in Oakland cemetery, Atlanta. Sarah's grave is un marked. (This paragraph from Frances O'Brien ) The "Index to Georgia Wills" James W. Brown-Cobb Co.-1887. "Welsman's will is recorded in the DEEDS - Taylor Co. Deed Book J pg 6-8. He names his heirs as sister Emma Sarah Welsman, also Ex., sister Maria C. Otis, sister Amelia E. Brown, neice Amelia C. Brown, and daughter Caroline Napier Welsman. JTW married Caroline Napier from Macon, GA." per wworm@gnat.net Sybil Willingham "Some Georgia County Records", gave me an index to Cobb Co. estates which lists the executors as being R.E. Brown and W. H. Nutting. R. E. Brown would undoubtedly be James's son Robert Ewing Brown. No record of burial found.
