Moore was the son of Ussery Moore (born ca 1807-1810 and died after 1880), a native Georgian and his wife Sarah Reaves, (born ca 1811 and died after 1880) daughter of Stephen Reaves and wife Sarah Flowers. Stephen R. Moore was born Dec. 3, 1838, while his family was living in Jones County. His father Ussery (spelled Usary in this census )was listed in household #136, no township listed, in Jones County. In 1850, the family was still in Jones County where they were farming. Ussery and all the children were born in Georgia according to this census, and Sarah, his wife, was born in North Carolina. The family was in the 1860 census of Taylor Co. GA, living in Butler. Taylor County had been formed in 1857 from Marion and Talbot. Sons William H. Moore and Stephen Romulus Moore lived in adjacent houses to their parents with their families, and they now worked for the railroad until the onset of the Civil War. During the Civil War, five of Ussery and Sarah's sons served the Confederacy as privates. Three enlisted in Taylor Co. in Co. "G", 6th GA Inf. Reg, the "Butler Vanguards", part of the Army of the Tennessee which saw many terrible battles in the Valley Campaign. Stephen Romulus Moore enlisted June 24, 1861in the Butler Vanguards. He was discharged at Richmond, VA on Nov. 9, 1861, after only 5 months service. In the 1863 Military Census of Taylor Co., Stephen was listed a farmer, age 24, and disabled- no doubt from wounds or illness suffered in the service. Stephen married Savannah Arah Ann B. Cox on Dec. 12, 1858 in Taylor Co. GA. Their children included Martha A. A.Moore, Stephen Hilliard Moore, Bishop Wilburn J. Moore., and Benjamin L. F. Moore. Stephen's brother, James U. Moore died in College Hospital in Lynchburg, VA, on Jan. 27, 1863. It is likely that he died from wounds or illness from the Battle of Fredricksburg, VA in which his unit was involved on Jan. 14-17. He was buried in No. 4, first line, lot 187. He was twenty-seven. He had married Sarah Ross in Jones Co. Apr. 13, 1854. Yet another brother fought under the flag of the CSA. Bishop M. Moore enlisted on May 27, 1861in the Butler Vanguards with his brothers. He was discharged on Nov. 25, 1861. It is possible that he (at age 16) was considered too young to enlist at the beginning of the war. At any rate, he re-enlisted on May 6, 1862 in adjoining Marion Co. in Co. "G", 49th GA Inf. Reg. and was killed at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. He was 18 years old and had married Harriet Martha A. Davis on Oct. 21, 1860 in Taylor Co. GA. Stephen's older brother, Robert S. Moore, age 24, enlisted as a private the same day in the Marion Company. He was appointed sergeant. Rolls show him absent from his company from July 1864 - Feb. 1865 on detached service to the Government Shops in Richmond, VA. His wife was Sarah A. Samuels, and they had John R. U. , Martha A. E. , James , Francis (Frank), Sarah (Sallie), Thomas, Joseph, Henry, and Anna. After the War, they left Taylor County GA for Texas. Brother William H. Moore, age 33, enlisted in Taylor Co. in Co. "F", 27th GA Inf. Reg., the "Taylor Guards", a part of the Army of Northern VA, on May 22, 1862. He was on detached duty at Richmond, VA, 1863- Apr. 30, 1864. He was in Macon, GA hospital on Feb. 20, 1865, with chronic rheumatism. William married Nancy Newton, and they had Leonard A. and Mary E. Moore. In the 1870 census of Taylor County, the Moore family still lived in the Panhandle District, fairly close together. Bishop's widow, Martha, and small children lived with Ussery and Sarah. This time it was sons Stephen and Lewis who had homes adjacent to their parents. Robert lived in the county, too, but not with the family group. William was no longer in Taylor County. In 1880 Stephen and family were still in Butler, along with several brothers and their families and their parents. Two of Stephen's brothers, Robert and George T. Moore had moved with their families to Harrison Co. TX by the 1880 census. George Thomas Moore had married Nancy Lou Curbo on Aug. 25, 1870 in Taylor Co. GA., and his large family of 15 children would grow up in Panola Co. TX. Stephen R. Moore died March 4, 1920, at the age of 82 years and was buried at Bethel Church Cemetery in Taylor County, GA. His wife, Savannah Arah Ann, born 1839, followed him in death four years later and was buried alongside her husband at Bethel.
