John McKenny, great-grandfather of Mary Elizabeth Caldwell Adams, was born in Virginia but fought in the Revolutionary War from Georgia. He commenced his military career in the revolutionary war, at the age of 16, and continued in the service of his country until the close of the war of independence, and was engaged under the gallant Clark, at the Battle of Kettle Creek, in Wilkes County, the result of which is known to have given a death-blow to the power of the Tories in Georgia. He was engaged in the Battle of Augusta, against the British and Tories; and in other skirmishes, incident to predatory warfare, in which he rendered important service to his country. He was remarkable for personal bravery, military enterprise, and energy of purpose. In private life, he was one of the most amiable of men, and his fellow- citizens evinced their estimation of his worth, by repeatedly electing him, with singular unanimity, to a high and responsible civil office, which he always filled to their entire satisfaction. Joseph Adams and family have not been located in the 1870 Census. They were in Talbot County in 1880 and in Taylor County in 1900, 1910 and 1920.
