North Carolina; died 1865 in Fannin County Georgia. Notes for David Mashburn: Records indicate that they continued to reside there until after their 2'nd child was born in Nov of 1826. The next two were born in Tennessee. They returned to North Carolina in March of 1832 when their 5th child was born and remained there until after the birth of the 8th their last on about 1840. Since most early settlers had large families and new immigrants were constantly arriving from overseas, the settled areas quickly became overcrowded. This made it necessary for the younger generations to find new areas in which to make a living. The Government was continuously acquiring new territory from the Indians to make room for the ever-expanding population. So Polly and David decided to join the movement into North Georgia. By the mid 1840's they were in Gilmer Co. Georgia where their first five children got married. Ths U.S. Census reports in the area revealed that most of Robert Jr's family had come to either Gilmer or, what is now, Fannin County Georgia before 1850. Many of their descendants still remain. ii. Willis Raburn Woody25, born June 07, 1797 in Rutherford, North Carolina; died August 21, 1870 in Fannin, Georgia; married Mary Clarissa Cancellor April 04, 1822 in Burke, North Carolina26; born December 29, 1804 in Lincoln North Carolina; died June 23, 1878 in Fannin, Georgia. Notes for Willis Raburn Woody: 1850 Union Co Georgia Cencus Grandfather Robert Woody Jr, was living with Willis Woody. He was 75 years old at that time. The Mill on Skeinah Creek, after finishing the house, the outside buildings, clearing the land, and planting the crops, he saw the need for the grist mill. He built a log mill house on Skeinah Creek. The creek ran through the middle of his farm. The beams were hand hewn and everything possible was built of logs. The milldam was also built of logs. A retaining rock wall was built on the north side of the creek. The road to the mill ran along side the creek itself. A tall rock wall was built for the millpond. The northeast side was the mountain. In 1848 the mill itself was installed by John Griffith. It was used for grinding corn. The millstones were cut from solid rock and hauled by oxen into Georgia from South Carolina. After the death of Willis, the mill property went to his son Conrad R. In 1880 Conrad erected a larger building and a wheat mill was installed by Marmonduke S Wanson. This mill ground corn, rye and wheat. The wheat mill was shipped from France. The new mill house had the original dutch door. The lower half of the door had a unique latch of seasoned hickory wood. Vandals stole this latch many years ago. The top half of the door also had a lock and a key. Laurel's father inherited the property after the death of Conrad and operated it himself for several years. He then hired a miller who lived in a small house beside the mill. Laurel and her family moved away in 1913 and sold the mill in 1916 to a Mr Vandiver. Mr Vandiver let the mill fall into bad condition. It was a Mr Morgan who restored it and changed the name to Skeinah Creek Mill. This is the only restored mill still functioning in Fain Co Georgia. The mill is the only thing left that Willis R Woody built. The springhouse was built right beside the road and any one passing by was welcome to stop for a good cool drink. Tode preferred to keep a gourd dipper hanging there because she would always say "gourds don' rust". More About Willis Raburn Woody: Fact 6: August 16, 200126 Notes for Mary Clarissa Cancellor: Willis and Mary moved to Skeenah Valley in Union (now Fannin Co) Co Georgia. Sadly enough, one of their first tasks was to bury their 14-year-old son John, who had died 2 days earlier as they neared the end of their journey. The area of their farm where John was buried was later donated for the formation of a church and school and is known today as is known today as the Sugar Hill Baptist Church. Willis's father Robert Jr, came to live with them after his wife died. Many of the member of this family, including Robert Jr., Willis R and Polly, are buried in the original Sugar Hill Cemetery, which is located about 12 miles south of Morganton, Georgia on state highway #60. iv. By 1849 most of his siblings had moved to north Georgia, so they decided to join them. They came to the area where his brother, Willis R , had settled in 1839 and lived there in the Skeenah Valley the rest of their lives and are buried in a family plot on the old home place. ix. Michael Whatley, born 1723; died 1788; married Catherine Bird. 352. John Woody III, born June 01, 1715 in Boston, Mass48; died 1762 in Haw River, Orange County, North Carolinia48. He was the son of 704. John Woody II and 705. Mary. He married 353. Mary Lindley December 27, 1738 in St George Parish, Baltimore, Maryland48. 353. Mary Lindley, born September 04, 1717 in New Garden, Chester, Pennsylvania48; died 1775 in Haw River, Orange County, North Carolinia48. Notes for John Woody III: John possessed and operated a "tan bark" still in Roxbury. It is assumed the tan bark mill was a leather-tanning mill, for the work tan bark was derived from the name and the source of the acid, which was an important ingredient, used in the tanning of leather. Tannin or tannic acid is an astringent compound taken from the bark of trees such as oak, hemlock and sumac. John and Mary were married in Massachusetts, they moved to Baltimore Co Maryland. Here there son James was born 09 29 1744. In the year 1755 the family moved to North Carolina on to a 600-acre land grant from the King of England. This land was on the Haw River and the family built a ferry, some of the remains can still be seen. Here we have another discrepancy. Some say John III married Mary Gowan, others Mary Lindley. Since both have the first name of Mary, either would be Mary Woody, once married to John. I have a theory that John first married Mary Gowan in Roxbury or Boston, she then died and he moved to Baltimore where he met and married Mary Lindley. Since the date given for his marriage to Mary Gowan is 1734/5 and the date for Mary Lindley is 1738, this would not be impossible. John Woody was one of the first settlers here. He built Woody's Ferry, at which place on Haw River was the road already laid off and used, from Hillsboro through the Stinking Quarter country to Guilford Court House Country on to Salisbury a notaabaale road, and historic ferry over which there passed Tryon and Cornwallis with their armies and many others John Woody raised a large family - once settled on the west side of the ferry and was killed by lighting. John Woody died without a will. Under the English Government all his property fell to his oldest son James, who divided it equally among his younger brothers. He moved to Orange County North Carolina by 1755. John Woody the 3rd received a Royal Grant to land on the Haw River in 1759 of 374 acres of land.
