Taylor COUNTY GA Bios - Coulter Family File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/taylor/bios/coulter.txt Descendants of Moses F. Coulter Generation No. 1 1. MOSES F.1 COULTER1 was born Bef. 1780 in Aft. 1830. He married SARAH COULTER1,2,3. She was born Abt. 1791 in South Carolina, and died Bef. 1880 in Georgia. Notes for MOSES F. COULTER: Moses F. Coulter was in Morgan County, GA in Dennis District for the 1820 Land Lottery of Georgia. He drew Lot 264 Sect 4 in Walton County, GA. This information is located in the 1820 Land Lottery of GA and is on page 74 and is 19th from the top. In the 1830 Censu of Butts County, GA Moses F Coulter had 7 males and 4 females in his household. In 1830 there were 3 females under 5 years. In the 1840 Census with Moses having died Sarah had 2 females under 5 years. So they have had more children than has been noted but some of them probably died at an early age. Notes for SARAH COULTER: In the 1840 Census of Pike County, GA, page 137, Sarah is listed with 2 males and 5 females. Moses is not listed so it is assumed that he died. Children of MOSES COULTER and SARAH COULTER are: 2. i. WILLIAM M.2 COULTER, b. Abt. 1812; d. Abt. 1858, Muscogee County, GA. ii. HENRITTA COULTER4, b. Bet. 1815 - 1820; d. Unknown; m. MOSES FREEMAN4, 05 August 1838, Troup County, GA4; b. Unknown; d. Unknown. Notes for HENRITTA COULTER: Henietta may not be one of Moses but she seems to fit the age group and in the 1830 Census Moses and Sarah had 7 males and 4 females. I male and one female was, of course, Moses and Sarah so that leaves 6 males and 3 females. 3. iii. LEVI F. COULTER, b. Abt. 1820, Georgia; d. Abt. 1875, Georgia. 4. iv. JOHN EDMUND COULTER, b. 27 January 1822, Monroe County, GA; d. 23 April 1865, Baltimore, MD. 5. v. IRENA E. WILEY HARRISON COULTER, b. 02 August 1827, Butts County, GA; d. 22 January 1901, Phenix City, Russell County, AL. 7. viii. ELIZABETH SUSAN COULTER, b. Abt. 1832. Generation No. 2 2. WILLIAM M.2 COULTER (MOSES F.1)5,6,7 was born Abt. 1812, and died Abt. 1858 in Muscogee County, GA. He married MARTHA W. DAVIS8,9 09 June 1833 in Butts County, GA10, daughter of CRISPIN DAVIS, SR.. She was born 01 December 1817 in Unknown11, and died 21 January 1873 in Unknown11. Notes for WILLIAM M. COULTER: William Coulter was listed in the 1840 Census of Pike County, GA, page 137, with3 males and 2 females in his houshold. He is living in close proximately to his Mother Sarah Coulter. Notes for MARTHA W. DAVIS: There not being much record of Russel Smith and Benjamin M as beimg the children William M. and Martha (Davis) Coulter the letter written by a Lt. James E Whiteside Co E 12th GA Inf seems to settle the question. It reads in part "Mrs. Martha Coulter, By request of your son Benjamin M. Coulter I hereby send you a statement of your son R. S. Coulter's account." He went on to inform her how to go about retreiving what remained of Smiths backpay salary and clothing allowance and etc. Another of her sons, John L. escorted her to Columbus to vouch for her and Smith. Children of WILLIAM COULTER and MARTHA DAVIS are: i. RUSSELL SMITH3 COULTER12, b. 1834, Monroe County, GA; d. 07 July 1883, Gettyeburg, PA. Notes for RUSSELL SMITH COULTER: Russell has not been found in the 1850 or the 1860 census report. But then neither was the rest of the family found on the 1850 Census and then Martha (Their Mother) and the rest of the family were in Taylor County, GA for the 1860 Federal Census. The 1860 Census did not include either of these two brothers. There was a Smith in the 1860 report in some county but he was listed as 18 and that is about 8 years off his age. It is questionable if this was Russell Smith or not. It was passed down by the family that they went to Arkansas and Texas but didn't find it to their liking so they returned to Georgia. This may account for then during the 1850 Census. Russel Smith Coulter joined Co. E !2th Regiment of the CSA in Columbus, GA on 15 June 1961 with his brother Benjamin M. Coulter. On his CSMP it was noted that he had been paid to 30 June (Date is blank but looking at all of the pages it can safely be deduced that it was 1863). He was listed as absent and in the notes section it said "In Richmond exchanged prisnors" so I don't know if this meant that he was being excahnged or if he was assigned to be there during an exchange. Smith was wounded and captured on 1 July 1863 at Gettysburg, PA. (CSMP states he was left in Penn wounded.). He died of a wound (Note in CSMP "G. S. to left lung") to the left lung on 7 July 1863. He was born 09 February 1820 in Monroe County, GA35, and died Bef. 1885 in Jackson County, FL35. Notes for IRENA E. COULTER: Irena is added here as a strong possibility that this is where she belongs. Moses had several girls and she fits in the age group of one of them. Notes for JAMES NICHOLS: James and his Father were in Pitt County, NC in the 1820s and 1830s and the in Stewart County, GA in 1838. Martha I think times are going to be harder about here this year than has ever been before. So if you can make out tolerable well there I guess it will be best to stay there provided you are all satisfide & can have good health. but if not you had better be here. I don't know but what it might be best after awhile for Sarah to bring the little ones out here and her stay here to ocok & wash for us. provided I can get provision to live on but I don't know yet how that will be. the time of year hasn't come yet. for the merchants to credit people and when it does come I don't know whether I can make any arrangments or not. if I cannot I cannot make a crop. but I recon mabe I can. I have not heard from Isabelle since last Sunday was a week ago. the reason she don't write to you I expect is because she has no paper stamps nor envelopes or anything of the kind. though when she was here she said she was going to write to you in a few days. I can enjoy myself I think fully as well as a fish out of water. but probably can live a little longer than fish out of water. I am in splendid health and feeling uncommonly well. you don't know how well I would like to put my arms around my sweet old darling girl to night. but can't reach so far. so it is no use to be thinking about it. write soon. tell the girls all to write I am afraid that Sarah & Joe will forget how to write I was mighty glad to get afew lines from sweet Lollie & Sweet Lillie. kiss my sugar little Boy for me. H 3rd Brig GA Inf In 1864 when Martha Coulter was making a deposition about her relationship to Russell Smith Coulter trying to collect his back pay and clothing allowance that he did not recieve prior to his death in Gettysburg, PA, Thomas L. (WILLIAM M.2, MOSES F.1)58 was born 1837 in Pike County, GA59, and died Aft. 1895 in River View, AL. He married (1) LOUISA WATKINS Abt. 1865 in unknown. She was born Abt. 1845 in Harris County, GA, and died Abt. 1883 in River View, AL. He married (2) SARAH A. SMITH60 Abt. 1889. She was born Abt. 1857 in GA, and died 11 January 1917 in Troup County, GA61,62. Notes for BENJAMIN MARION COULTER, SR.: Ben has not been found in the 1850 or the 1860 census report. He and his brother Russell S. were probably roaming the country and were not living at a home when the Census were taken. But then neither was the rest of the family found on the 1850 Census and then Martha (Their Mother) and the rest of the family were in Taylor County, GA for the 1860 Federal Census. It was passed down by the family that they went to Arkansas and Texas but didn't find it to their liking so they returned to Georgia. This may account for them during the 1850 Census. There has been no accounting of Benjamin for the 1880 Census. Benjamin M.(Marion) Coulter joined the CSA on June 15, 1861 in Columbus, Ga. This was Co E, 12th Regiment of Columbus, GA. He and His brother, Russell Smith Coulter joined at the same time. Ben was wounded at McDowell, VA with a gunshot to the face and mouth and later captured at Spotsylvsnia, VA. on 10 May 1864. He was released at Elmira, NY on 16 June 1865 after being there about 15 months. Information found in The Roster of Confederate Soilders of Georgia by Henderson page 202 as well as his CMSR (Compiled Military Service Record). After being released, Benjamin was quoted by his son (Joseph Thomas "Tom") as saying it took him three months to get home. Walking, working for food while on the way. Benjamin remarried about 1889 to the widow Sarah A (Sallie) Bailey and she bore him three children before he died (Before the 1900 Federal Census). He was laid to rest in the Christian Church Cementary in River View, Al. It was said the Sallie would holler at Ben and say "Ben, come here, your kids and my kids are beating the hell out of our kids." I guess it is possible because part of the three sets of children lived in the same house at one time. My grandfather, George W., said that you had get home before dark because after that you couldn't find a spot on the floor to sleep on. Notes for LOUISA WATKINS: Louisa was born in Harris County, GA or, at least, she was there in the 1860 Census with her Family. Apparently, Louisa died in 1883. Her grand daughter. Alice McCann, says her mother, Josephine, told her that she helped tend to Louisa (her Mother) and she died of "Milk Leg" which leads you to believe she died soon after the birth of Mettie, her last born. And Mettie was born 31 Dec 1882. Marriage Notes for BENJAMIN COULTER and LOUISA WATKINS: A check of the Taylor County, GA marriage records was conducted and no entry was found for this couple. Notes for SARAH A. SMITH: In 1900 Sarah A. Coulter had five children, two with W.A. Bailey (1st husband) and three with Benjamin M. Coulter (2nd husband) and all five were living at that time. Somehow the last name had gotten on the Census as COLTON and this made it differcult to locate them on that Census. Sarah A Coulter was laid to rest along side William Coulter in the Christian Church Cementary in River View, AL Children of BENJAMIN COULTER and LOUISA WATKINS are: i. WILLIAM M.4 COULTER, b. 1866, Butler, Taylor County, GA; d. Abt. 1895, River View, AL. Notes for WILLIAM M. COULTER: In the 1870 Census there was a son, the first born, that had the name of John and he was listed as four years of age. In the 1880 Census the first born was named William M. and was listed as fourteen. So William (Billy as he was called) and John are the one and the same. Billy was born blind and attended the Talladega Institute for the Deaf and Blind in Talladege, AL. I was told by Alice McCann, Billy's neice, that he attended the school and had a Braille Book from that school. It is still in the family. Alice's mother, Josephine, was the sister of Billy and I believe that she told me that Billy died in the mid eightteen ninties and he was in his mid twenties. I do know about where is grave is. I know the plot that he is in and it has to be one of two graves. 27. ii. BENJAMIN M. COULTER, JR, b. 1868, Taylor County, GA; d. 1950, River Vier, AL. 28. iii. He married LOUISA HOLTON FORD, daughter of ELI FORD and BARBARA GIBSON. She was born May 1853 in Georgia, and died Unknown in Unknown. Notes for WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON COULTER: During the Civil War he served in Co K, 46th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry. He enlisted on 4 March 1862 at Columbus, GA. and was captured on June 14 while fighting near Kennesaw Mountain, GA. Since the Union Forces did not list him as captured, he was listed as a deserter from his Company. He was sent to a prison of war camp near Greensboro, NC and was paroled from there on 1 May 1965. Like a number of the Coulters, Henry was a butcher by trade, although from time to time he ran a bsr room and a grocery store as well. He owned all the property behind Goodwin Cementary, now called Ingersol Hill. He had a truck farm, raised cattle and had butcher pens. The bar room he owned was on 14th street near the bridge. At various times he worked for Mr. Herring, owned a butcher store and/or grocery alone, together with Thomas L. Coulter or Charley McCandle both of whom were brothers-in-law. Thomas was also his first cousin. Henry and Lou Coulter lived at 771 8th Street (present 20th Street between 4th and 5th Avenue)This was across from her sisters Georgia Ann Ford and Mary Jane Fors. At one time they also owned a house on 2nd Street (present day 16th Street) according to their great-grandson Wilburn Knighton. Although they lived in Columbus or Prhnix City most of their lives, apparentlyy, Henry and Lou once decided to seek their fortunes out west. According to Family Tradition they got as far as the Longview, Texas area, but found that it was not as properous as they had anticipated--in fact, they "nearly starved to death" as Minnie Gentry relayed the story of her parents--and returned to the Chattahoochee Valley soon after Minnie's birth in 1877. She was, however, named Mineola for the town in which she was born. Whether another daughter's middle name of Mexie is a result of the western experience I do not know, but it certainly was not a common Alabama name. Henry and Lou always kept box seats at the Springer Opera House in Columbus the year round. He was amember of Wilson Williams F&AM, Lodge 61 I.O.G.F in Columbus, Creek Tribe No. II I.O.R.M. of Columbus and the Degree Council of the Red Men, and a member of A.O.U.W. He died of Comsumption. BENJAMIN M.4 COULTER, JR (BENJAMIN MARION3, WILLIAM M.2, MOSES F.1)116 was born 1868 in Taylor County, GA, and died 1950 in River Vier, AL. He married GEORGIA VIRGINIA REDDEN 18 March 1894 in Troup County, GA, daughter of WILLIAM REDDEN and SARAH REDDEN. She was born 1877 in Lagrange, GA, and died July 1958 in River View, AL117,118. Notes for BENJAMIN M. COULTER, JR: Marion Coulter went to work in the River View Cotton Mill in 1880 when he was 8 years old. He was terminated because of ill health. He was going blind so this is probably the cause of his termination. But he continued to live in a Company until his death on 4 August 1950. He was buried in the Fairview Cemetery. Here is a tribute to Benjamin Marian Coulter that his grandson, John F. Bledsoe, wrote. The first toy I remember Grandfather giving me was a top. He had made the toy from an empty spool of thread that my grandmother had thrown away. Grandfather, called P-Pa by us grandchildren, was always making toys. Many of his toys were original and most of them made noise, much to the dismay of the grownups in the house. The tops would whistle and the Spinning buttons would whirr as they spun around the strings. I remember on toy that Grandfather made that could be kept spinning by strings attached to the top. But, Best of all was we liked the wind vanes. Grandfather added a propeller to the wind vanes and attached a shaft that ran to a little man carved of wood. When the wind blew, the little man seemed to be working his heart out turning the propeller Grandfather's workshop was a little shack in the back of the House. All of his grandchildren love to sit and watch Grandfather work with his tools. He was so slow and careful when he worked. Grandfather would run his hands over each piece of work, and he would check and recheck, and when satisfied he would either nail or glue the pieces together. Grandfather had about a hundred nails in the walls of his workshop, hanging on a nail or a group of nails was a tool, and Grandfather knew exactly where each tool belonged. My brothers and I would slip into Grandfather,s workshop and try to make a toy. I think we used half the tools in the shop each time we were there. We never put the tools back where they belonged and Grandfather pitched a fit. "Hazel, I'm going to kill those kids of yours if you don't keep them out of here", He yelled at my Mother, his daughter. Dad would help Grandfather straighten out the tools and above the yells of the spanked grandchildren you could hear Grandfather working again. Children are usually unappreciative , and we grandchildren were no different. I'm sure Grandfather understood when he did not hear a word of thanks. If he have only seen the joy in our eyes when he gave us a gift, I'm sure he would have been rewarded with a child's way of expressing love and appreciation. Maybe our laughter and the noise we made as we spun our tops and played with the spinning buttons were his reward. You see Grandfather was blind. John Francis Bledsoe 823 Garret Ct. GEORGE W.4 COULTER (BENJAMIN MARION3, WILLIAM M.2, MOSES F.1) was born October 1879 in Butler, Taylor County, GA, and died 23 October 1938 in Columbus, GA. He married (1) ANNA BELLE LANKFORD 05 January 1902 in Troup County, GA Book K Page 283, daughter of HENRY LANKFORD and MATTIE STREETER. She was born May 1885 in ? Riverview, AL, and died 1919 in Julliette, GA. He married (2) MELISSA HESTERLY Abt. 1922. She was born Unknown in Unknown, and died Unknown in Unknown. Notes for GEORGE W. COULTER: George (W.) Washington Coulter (My memories of him and the tales told of him. John David Coulter) On Friday morning, 22 October 1938 at about 5:30 A. M. a gas exploision occured in the Columbus, Ga jail that injured several people, George W. was one of them. Taken to the hospital, he had a broken collar bone and some other injuries. His son , George L. visited him on Saturday and was told that he was not badly injured. On Sunday he was called at home in River View, AL and told that his Father had died at 3:30 P. M. that day, Sunday 23 October 1938, apparently from undetected internal injuries. George W. Coulter will be remembered by the people of River View, AL for many reasons as he was raised in this Community but was born with the wanderlust in his blood. I don't know of any written facts or photographs of my grandfather George Washington Coulter except the News Article mentioned above about his death. The Washington is questionable by many people except my Aunt Frances, his daughter. The Census on gives the initial W. but my Dad, his son said that G. W. told him he didn't know what it was but at one time in school or something he was told he had to have a middle name so he said Washington and that is how he said he got the name. The naming pattern, at that time, in this family gave all the sons a name of the fathers father, himself or a brother. This is how old Benjamin name the rest of his sons and he had no relations with the name Washington but he did have a brotherof his father named Wiley and this, I suspect, is his name. But believe me I will not argue with my Aunt Frances. But of him I can re-tell many stories that were told to me by numerous people that knew him well. I got them from listening to Mr Carlton McGinty at his G&M store in downtown River View, AL. I can recall quite well standing around the old pot-bellied stove on a cold winter morning waiting for the school bus to take us to Fairfax to Valley High. At this time the High School consisted of the tenth, eleventh and twelveth grades. The nineth grade was still the senior grade in all the Junior High Schools at each village. One such story dealt with the times that my grand-dad would be in town and at the store talking and informing everyone about the rest of the world. He was a traveler and never stayed anywhere more than a few weeks. But he always came back to River View and Columbus, Ga because that's where his family was. Anyway, on with the story, He would come into the store and look on the table below where the bananas hung. In those days the bananas were delivered still on the stalk and the most convient way of displaying them was to hang them up by the stalk. The general rule was if a banana was ripe enough to fall off onto the table, you could have it for free. Of course, if a banana was there he would pick it up and eat it. If there was not one there he would jump up and down on the floor trying to make one drop off, if this did not work, he would look around and see if he was being watched, if not, then he would just reach up and pull one off, as if it had fell. Mr. Carlton Mcginty told me he was aware of this little trick and would purposely look away when these shenannagans started so my grand-dad could have a banana. He felt that my grand-dad knew that he was aware of him watching him, or at least judiously, looking away. To Mr. Carlton, this was a small investment because it was a known fact that wherever my grand-dad was there either was a crowd or soon would be, so he got to sell some extra soda water that he would not have otherwise sold and on top of that he got to listen to his stories, also. You see, my grand-dad moved around all the time. I doubt, seriously, if he had a home after his last wife died and the kids were grown. In fact, he didn't often have a home before the two kids were married. They would be handed off to one kinfolk or another and G. W. would come to see them and stay awhile. He, once, took them to Natchez, MS and left them in a boarding house while he finally ended up in Rome, GA and had to send for them. The lady at the boarding house did not want them to go because they were to much and some of the people would bring clothes by for my Da d and Aunt but she would have give them to her own children. G.W. sent train tickets for them to join him in Rome. My Aunt and Dad were going to run away and catch the train. The Conductor had told them exactly when to be at the station. My Aunt made it but for some reason my Dad didn't. My Grand dad finally had to call the Police there and had my Dad dilevered to the train sttion by the police. He had one small paper sack of clothes of all that were give to them. If he had to give an address, it had to be either my Dads or my Aunt Frances, my Dad's sister. G. W. told my Dad at one time that he had worked in 93 cottonmills in the GA, Tn and AL area. And from talk I heard he must have done at least that. There are many stories told about him from several people who remember him. I grew up listening to the stories about a man I can recall seeing only twice and those two times are just flashes in my mind. When he would return to River View after one of his travels word would spread through town like wildfire and people would gather at "the stores", the traditional gathering place, to hear him. My cousin, many times removed, told of the story that her husband was in bed recovering from the flu when someone would come down the street hollaring that George Coulter was in town, and despite her pleadings, her husband got up and went to see him. She said she could have killed my grtandfather, George, at that time. He was a showman, I guess, because between his tales and talking of his travels he kept the group laughing. If this tale is true or not, I do not know, but one of his tales was that he came to this cotton mill, in the fall, and asked for a job and got it. He went to work and the boss, the man who hired him asked why he didn't pull his coat off. His answer was that he didn't have a shirt. The boss told him to go to his house on the hill and within site of the mill, and tell his wife to give him a shirt. He told him to tell his wife to look down at the mill and he would wave his hand in confirmation. So he went to the house and told the man's wife her that husband said for her to give him a shirt and ten dollars and for her to look at the mill and he would wave to her to confirm it. She looked toward the mill, saw her husband wave, then she gave him the shirt and ten dollars. George promptly left that town. George W. once told his son George L., my father, that he had worked in at least ninety three cotton mills around the Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama areas. Another oft told story around town about him came to me from Mr. Carlton McGinty, who ran the G&M Store in River View. The bananas used to come to the stores on a stalk and this they would hang from the ceiling, over a table that was built against the wall. The gerneral rule was that any banana that fell off the stalk was free to who ever picked it up. George W. would come in, usually from one of his trips and look for a banana. If there was none on the table, he would look around and if no one was watching he would jump up and down on the floor trying to shake one loose. If this failed, he would again look around and if he found no one looking, he would, real quickly, reach up and pull one off the stalk and walk away and eat it. Mr. McGinty said they never said anything to him about it because they figured he brought in so much business on his visits they thought it was a good investment. Notes for MELISSA HESTERLY: After leaving George W. Coulter she went back to Palmetto, GA and some said died at 103 yrs. of age. Had a brother named Tom that was Chief of Police abt 1962-70. Notes for PATRICK DAVID SY DYKES: Patrick David Sy Dykes adopted in 1973 and arrived at Hartsfield International airport in Atlanta on 15 September 1973. He was accompanied by Richard Darrah, his wife Jodi and the actress Ina Balin. Ms. Balin acted opposite of Paul Newman in "From The Terrace". David's vietnamese name was Vu tien Sy. As was the case with all the children who came to her orphanage, she gave them her family name of "Vu". In vietnamese, "thi" means "girl" and "tien" means "boy". They called him "Sy" (which is pronounced "Cee"). Upon adpotion, his name was changed to Patrick David after Dr. Patrick D. Tisdale who was instrumental in saving his life. David was found by a policeman at about the age of 18 months wandering the streets after the battle of Quang Tri. He was starving and close to death, Dr. Tisdale said that he was so malnourished and emotionally depressed that he had gotten to the point where he refused to take food. That he would turn his face away from the food in order to keep from having to eat. He had to be force fed for two weeks before he was out of danger of dying. A search for relatives proved unsucessful and afterwards he was declared eligible for adoption. 171. v. HEATHER LIEN DYKES, b. 06 October 1972, Columbus, GA. 125. Notes for JOHN DAVID COULTER, SR: I have several memories from this place. I am going to relate them but they may not be in the correct chronological order. The first of them is my Dad lifting me up to look out the window at the light coating of snow on the coal pile. I was not tall enogh to see out the window and probably didn't really care. But it was the first snow that I saw of any signifinace until I was 23 years old and was snowed in at a truch stop on, of all places, Highway 80 in Arizona. I remember Mama baking sweet potatoes in the ashes of the fireplace. But I can remember seeing her do this many times over the years. This is the first time that I recall her doing so. I dont't know how they ever heated a house, if they did with those little old fireplaces. What were they? 12 or 14 inches wide. This is where we lived in the other half of the house with Mr. General Randall and his wife, my great aunt Mettie, the sister of my Dad’s father. She was my grandfather Coulter’s baby sister. She was also the Mother of Melvin Hopkins and his two sisters and a half sister Mary Fay Randall. Now Aunt Mettie and Mr. Reynolds took me fishing many times, I’m sure, but I can remember only a time or two. The instances may have happened at differnent times or they may have been on the same day. We are going across the old community cow pasture trying to catch grasshoppers. Apparently, we were not having much luck because Mr. Reynolds stopped and, with his pocket knife, cut down a small pine sapling. He used theis to knock down the grasshoppers and I would pick them up, pull their wings off and out them in his jar or tin can. I can remember looking backward and seeing this big green wooden fence. I didn't know at that time that it was the ball park. At the river bank, and I can’t remember if this is the same day or not, we baited our hooks and sat down to fish. I can remember Aunt Mettie and Mr. Reynolds catching some fish. In my memory they seemed real small but this was in the late thirties and everybody was hungry, Im sure. The legal size for them was "It it can get the bait and stay on the hook, it was big enough to eat.". I never saw them throw one back. I know that I would get impatient and start dragging my line through the water pretending that the cork was a motorboat making waves. When this started I was politely asked or told, I'm not sure which, to move on down the bank. Or just to quit playing around. Later that day we would go back across the pasture heading home and the times that I remember there we a few fish on the line. I try to search my memory and try to recall what it looked like coming back across that pasture but the only image I have is a few buildings down along side the branch that served as milking and feed sheds for people that had cows in the pasture. Remember this was a community pasture owned by the mill company and fenced for the people to use. GI Street were not there at that time. At the same house, I remember my Granddad Coulter sitting in a rocker on the porch rolling a cigarette, from tobacco in a cloth bag, His shirt front was open and I could easily see the hair on his chest. After getting the cigarette rolled, he put it in his mouth and lit it. In just a short matter of time, he jerked that thing out of his mouth, slapped at his chest real fast and said"hot dammit". I figured at this point that some burning tobacco had fallen onto his chest. The only other time that I remember him was that he had me in a boat at the river and had me sitting in the front on the floor and he was in the back paddling. I don't know anything more that that. It is a very short action image. It was in Ocober 1938 that he was killed so I less than 4 years old when these incidents happened. Back to my granddad Myhand's house where I was born. These all happened before April 1938. My Mother use to go to town (West Point) on paydays with my grandfather to buy groceries and other things. It is these other things that interested me. When you went into my granddad's house through the right door, looking from the street there was a bed there that came almost the the door. When they would come in from town, the groceries would be taken to the kitchen and the “other things” were thrown on this bed to be sorted out, I suppose. I would have to stand on the footboard to be able to see. If I was on the floor I could not see what was on the bed. It was a metal bedstead. The big pipe I call it (about 2" in diameter) was bent into a very wide "U" and the smaller pipes about 1/2" diameter was built in vertically. The piece that I stood on I do not recall seeing them. Then I remember going over the the house that my granddad would later move into and visiting someone. I thought for years it was Uncle Oscar and Aunt Mattie Williams, but I have learned just recently that it might have been someone else. Then I remember seeing my grandma setting the table in this house and she had on a dress of blue cloth withsmall white dots all over it. The next scene was in the room on the left front of the house, There was something in the corner in a big box and I wanted to see it. Someone said "No, you don't need to" and my Dad said "that's all right let him see". Then someone picked me up to look in and I saw my grandma laying there. I don/t remember any reaction on my part to looking at her so I really must not have known just what it meant. Remember on that day I was just 3 years and 5 weeks old. Back to the house on lower street. I remeber one time, my Dad trying to play ball with me. Of course, I wasn't even old enouh at this time to really know what playing ball was all about. Also, one year I planted a garden in the back of this house. It was just a few lima beans. But I was fortunate and it seemed they all came up. Then I went out one day to see them and all I had left were the stalks. My sister and had picked the beans off of every one of them. They had not even put on their leaves yet. They had just come out of the ground and were still in the shape of the bean and this is what she picked off. I have asked her many times over the years, “Why?” and all she can say is " I don't remember it". We had a pear tree in the back yard and at this particular time they were painting the outside of the house because I can see some scaffolding about the house. Dad and me and the boy next door were sitting out ther talking one day, Well they were talking and I was listening. The boy that lived in the house next door was Fred Scroggins, Dad told him to go down and get us a pear, Fred took off and in a few minutes he was back with a pear for us all. Dad took me to get a haircut from George Story who lived just down the street. I belive it was in the house just down from the old drain pipe under the street. I remember sitting in a highchair and then Dad getting a haircut, also. He told me it was cheaper that way, Haircuts were 15 cents each but two for quaerter. At that ime W. M., One of George's oldest boy was making a corner cabinet from plywood and he was using a coping saw so he could cut curves. He was not done with it at that time and I don't know if I ever saw it, but I feel like I did. Then in the next house up the street from us was a man named Mr. Virgil and he had a boy named Billy. I remember going to his house one day to watch a ball game. On the back of his house, inside, they hade a big screened opening on an enclosed backporch. In bad weather, it seemed, they had a type of closure they could let down and close the opening. Anyway, on that particular day, I went up to watch the ballgame with Billy and his Mom from the back porch. What I saw was a donkey baseball game. I remember watching part of it, but of course, we were to far away to hear or see much detail. Billy has told me that he does not recall this incident. My firat day of Kindergarden. I must not have like it and went home. I don't remember going home but, let me tell you, I, definitely remember going back. My Mom had a little switch and she whipped me all the way back up the street to the kindergarden and Mrs. Beattie Goggans took a shoe string and tied the doors so I couldn't get out again. I really don't know if I wanted to get back out. Children of JOHN COULTER and BARBARA LIEBENTHAL are: 172. i. DONNA KAY7 COULTER, b. 04 July 1959, Pocatella, ID. 173. ii. DR. This was a very difficult time for Tori because she loved her step-father Gerald Wayne Dykes, Jr. so much. She called him by his nick name Gerry and always referred to him as "My Gerry". She was about four years old when she went to live with her biological father. There were many hard feelings surrounding the circumstances of her mother's decision to relinquish custody and much sadness because Tori was loved so much by her stepfather Gerry's family. ii. ZACHARY JOSEPH AUSTIN DYKES, b. 27 June 1995, Columbus, GA. Notes for ZACHARY JOSEPH AUSTIN DYKES: Zachary's middle name, Joseph, was after his father's best friend, Joseph Womack (Little Joe) who was killed in a car crash when he was 14 years old. Zachary's father, Gerry, and Little Joe were like brothers. Joe taught Gerry how to play the drums and his mother (Montez) gave his drum set to Gerry. Zachary's brit was performed in the home of his maternal grandparents in Rockville, MD by Rabbi Hennish.. 171.
