According to the 1850 Federal Census of Talbot Co., GA, Hiram was a resident of that county with Eleanor (wife) and children Patrick age 15, Martha age 12, Ellinor age 10, Julia age 6, Andrew age 3 and Walter age 8 months. In addition there were two laborers listed in the household.. In 1860 Hiram is listed in the Taylor Co. GA Federal Census, with his wife and children Julia A age 15, Andrew J age 13, Hiram W. age 10 and John Willis age 22 (overseer) His occupation in 1860 was listed as farmer with real-estate valued at $11,820 and personal property as $27,000 . Hiram parents, William Drane (b. 14 July 1765 in Prince George Co., MD, and d. 6 February 1847 in Columbia Co., GA) and Cassandra Magruder (b. 14 September 1765 in Montgomery Co., MD, d. 26 February 1860 in Talbot Co., GA) were married 31 October 1792 in Richmond Co., GA. Here these two good old people lived and toiled and accumulated property. At the death of Mr Drane his farm had increased to 1500 acres.” Based upon Columbia Sentinel in 1883, Hiram’s parents left Maryland in 1786 and settled in Columbia County, then Richmond first buying a small farm by the time of William’s death the farm had grown to 1500 acres. Cassandra moved to Talbot Co., GA where she died. Hiram was a Justice of the Peace in Talbot County (in the records on-line for 1835 - 1836 In 1836 Hiram Drane ws one of the trustees of the newly formed Prattsburg Academy. In 1855 Hiram Drane was one of the trustees serving Levert College when it changed its name from Talbotton Female Academy. Hiram was one of the first Justices of the Inferior Court in the newly formed Taylor County, 1852. On Feb 19-1852, he was one of several Justices who were given the responsibility for lands originally owned by John L. Parks which became Taylor County Property. He was elected the first state senator from Taylor County. (1852) Hiram moved to Mississippi some time between 1860 and 1870. Based upon his will recorded in DeSota Co., MS, he had extensive land holdings.
