Jehu settled along the Big Branch of Dutchman's Creek in Surry Co, VA. Apparently served as a private in the NC Continental Army at the outbreak of the Amer. Rev. He later received a bounty grant of 640 ac. in Davidson Co, TN & assigned the bounty to Benjamin Sheppard. About 178?, Jehu Gaultney & the Mitchells migrated to Augusta, Richmond Co, GA. Jehu likely made his home along the western border of White Oak Creek where he received a citizen's bounty of 250 ac. in 1781. By the time the Gaultneys arrived in GA, the state was in the hands of the British & Loyalist armies. Augusta had been captured in Jan. of 1780 by Loyalist Col. Thomas Brown. Not long after arriving in Augusta, Jehu Gaultney enlisted in Richmond Co. Militia led by Patriot Col. Greenberry Lee. In April 1781 the Patriots, consisting of GA & NC militia, including Lee's regiment of militia men from Richmond Co., began a successful attack known as the Siege of Augusta. On 20 Feb 1784, Jehu Gaultney was granted 250 ac. of land in Washington Co, GA by Governor. John Houstoun for his services rendered for the American cause during the war. Jehu likely sold this property as no record shows him to have ever lived in Washington Co. He also received a grant of 250 ac. along Great Kiokee Creek in Richmond Co. (now part of Columbia Co.) After 1820, the Gaultneys crossed the Flint River into Talbot Co, GA near the present-day Taylor Co. line. Jehu, rugged frontiersman & brave soldier of independence, died in the early winter of 1827. The whereabouts of his grave remains unknown." REFERENCE: 1820 Jones Co, GA Census, p. 113: living between John GALTANY (GAULTNEY) (his son) & Polly MITCHELL (fem). It was while he was living in this area of state that actions began leading up to War of 1812 with Great Britian. Most Georgians, particularly on western frontier where Gaultneys lived, were concerned with influence British held over Creek Indians, who led raids into white territory murdering & pillaging. Tecumseh encouraged their efforts & British sent arms to violent Upper Creeks through port of Pensacola. John walked 30 miles to enlist in service on 1 Oct 1814, after receiving draft notice. Ben resold this property to Jesse BARFIELD on Jul 21, 1855 for $71. Aug. 1, 1863, Benjamin Franklin GAULTNEY enlisted as private in Co. A, 12th Reg. of GA Cavalry State Guards commanded by Capt. W.H. ROBINSON & later Capt. McGOWAN. This regiment was probably part of Hardee's "little army" that harassed Union troops of General. Sherman during their destructive "March to the Sea" from Atlanta to Savannah. Ben GAULTNEY was among those soldiers who were detailed to guard Flint River Bridge at the close of the war in April. of 1865. After the war, Ben returned home & shortly thereafter moved with his family to the Gatlins Dist. of Macon Co, where he resumed a life of farming. In the 1870 census, his real estate was valued at $1400 & his personal estate valued at $600. According to a 1944 article in the "Butler Herald", Ben GAULTNEY moved his family to the Panhandle Dist. of Taylor Co, in 1871 & settled on an area known as the Graball "surrounded by heavily timbered mountain peaks & fertile valleys." During the harsh reconstruction years, Ben continued farming & carried his surplus crops to Macon in a covered wagon. In 1873, Ben GAULTNEY, along with Jim GOODWIN, Brantley MOSLY, John PETERMAN & Frank PETERMAN, chartered the Midway Baptist Church in the Panhandle Dist. of Taylor Co. along Little Patsilaga Creek. This old historic church played a prominent role in the lives of Ben's descendants, as his son, Rev. Monroe Tony GAULTNEY, pastored the church for more than 50 years, & today his descendants meet there annually for the Gaultney Family Reunion. On Dec. 23, 1881, Ben sold to James HARRIS for $750, 101 1/4 acres of land in the east half of Lot #79 & 50 acres in the southeast quarter. of Lot #80 , all in the 14th Dist. of Taylor Co. The family suffered a great loss in 1887 when a typhoid fever epidemic hit Taylor Co. claiming lives of numerous citizens. Within four months, Ben & Catherine laid to rest four of their sons, Zack, Judd, Rolfe & Julious, all of whom were buried in the Midway Cemetery. In 1891, Ben became paralyzed in the left side of his body due to a stroke. Two local physicians, Dr. C.F. FICKLING & Dr. W.C. BATEMAN, gave a medical report describing his physical & mental condition: "...he suffers from paralysis of the bladder muscles ... the left side of body, arm & leg partially paralyzed & the spine somewhat implicated ... his mind very much impaired." Ben received a pension from the state of GA for his service during the War Between the States. In his application he stated that he & his wife, both aged in years, were unable to work & they were both supported by their children at a total cost of $60 a piece annually. Joe H. BRUMBELOE, who served with Ben during the war, stated in a witnesses' oath for the pension application that Ben was "a physical & mental wreck. Benjamin Franklin GAULTNEY died at his home on 1 October 1897. This old "Son of the South" was laid to rest in the Midway Baptist Church Cemetery, Taylor Co, GA.” REFERENCE: Taylor Co.
