Mr. Hobbs was nearly 80 years of age, and had been a very useful citizen. His death was very unexpected as he had been sick but a few days. He had many friends and relatives who will regret to learn of his death. His remains will be interred at Philipi today. (Buried at Philipi Cemetery, Schley county) Son Jonathan Clements Hobbs. The Schley County News Thursday, August 8, 1889 Johnson Hobbs, who was killed last Sunday at St. Cloud in Lake County, Florida, by a negro, was for a long time a resident of Schley County and his many friends and relatives still residing here learn with deep regret the news of his untimely death. Additional Comments: (Harris Hill) Transcriber's Note: This report is somewhat in error as St. Cloud has never been a part of Lake County. It was originally part of Orange County and later became one of the principle cities of Osceola County. Today it is located 25 miles east of Walt Disney World and is the transcriber's home. It was originally begun as a retirement community for veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic and would have been in it's infancy at this time. It did not have a cemetery at this time. St. Cloud residents were then buried in nearby Kissimmee's Rose Hill cemetery. A Jonathan Clements Hobbs' grave is in Rose Hill Cemetery. His marker indicates he died Aug 6, 1889 and that he was murdered. This must be the same man. I was unable to locate for certain the same Jonathan Hobbs on census. There are two, one 10 years older and one 10 years younger. I did however locate a marriage record. Jonathan C. Hobbs married Ella Threlkeld in Schley Co. 24 Dec. 1885.
