James Turner Lucas was born in Monroe Co., Spring Hill near Russellville, on Oct. 10, 1839.Lived there 2 years, moved to Crawford Co. Lived there till fall of 1860 then moved to Taylor Co. Married Miss Saluda Hicks on Dec. 18, 1866 on the Danielly place near the Pope place in Crawford County. There were 11 children bron to their union. Louis Lucas married Pamelia James Henry, Clyde, Lauria (or Lousia), Bessie, Katie, Ray, Lucile, Ida; one died in infancy Entered the war May 24, 61 with Company C Crawford Grays 6th Ga. Reg. Under the leader of Capt Whylie C. Cleveland, Colquits Reg afterwards Bridigeer Gen Went from here Richmond then to Yorktown, stayed there 11 months, retreated from there to Richmond, stayed there till the battle of Seven Pines then the skirmish at Macanicville morning June 27, 62 then the battle of Cold harbor afternoon June 27-62, Fought 7 days around Richmond - then our Brigade was left at Richmond After that we were ordered go on to Maryland to rejoin the army - went into camp at Federich (or Fedricah) City. Went from there to Boonsboro, and then to South Mts,, Battle of South Mts about 14 or 15 of Sept 62, then back to Sharpesburg - fought the Battle of Sharpsburg Sept 17, 62 - wounded at Sharpsburg. Went across the Potomic River back to Va to Shepherdstown. We remained in the Shenandoah Valley from then on till the last of Nov or 1st Dec. left the valley and crossed the Blue Ridge Mts. At Haymarket then went fort Royal below Fredericks stayed there until Dec. 12 marched from there the night of 12 to Fredericks fought the battle of Fredericksburg Dec. 12, 62 Remained at Quince Station stayed there until later part of April and discharged to come home - Came home and then put in State troops Ga. Malicia as 1st Lieut Company C - 8 Ga Reg - sent to Atlanta, was sent to West Point on Chattahochie River - then ordered back to Atlanta - arrived there the night of the Battle of Atlanta, was taken sick and sent to Macon to Hospital. Was sick in Taylor Co. during the battle of Jonesboro - Got well went back to my company this side of Jonesboro Came back to Macon, was then engaged in the battle of Griswoldville after the battle of Gris - were ordered to Savannah stayed in Savannah until it was evacuated went then to Bramburg, S. C. - were in Hamburg S.C. when the surrender came April 9, 65 paroled to Macon Came back home in Taylor Co.
