TAYLOR COUNTY GA Bios Merritt, Nancy Jones File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Gwen Brooks http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/taylor/bios/merritt.txt The Macon News, Wednesday, Oct. 18, 1972, pg. 4B Party Number 1 Is Birthday 97 It was the first big birthday party Mrs. Nancy Jones Merritt ever had. And since it was number 97 a few days ago Mrs. Merritt was entitled to the best ever. Her family and 27 friends, including the Rev. Bobby Barger from Bloomfield Church of God made certain Mrs. Merritt celebrated the day in style. The party was held at Goodwill Nursing Home on Houston Avenue where Mrs. Merritt is residing, and featured a large cake in her honor. Mrs. Merritt, who has been an active member of the church, welcomes visitors any time of day. Mrs. Thomas B. Pitts, a friend who attended the party, said, "People have told me they were going to visit Mrs. Merritt and bring her some cheer. But when they come away, it is she who has cheered them and blessed them with her testimony and memory." According to family bible records, Mrs. Merritt was born Oct. 1, 1875, one mile from Potterville, GA. She and her husband married Dec. 17, 1911 and moved to a new home near Potterville, now nostalgically referred to by family members as "the old homestead." Mrs. Merritt resided there until 14 years ago when she moved to Macon to be closer to her son, John Merritt. Mrs. Merritt is grandmother to six, including Steve Merritt, Darrell Merritt, Miss Terry Lee Merritt, and Mrs. Yvonne Davis, all of Macon; Paul Merritt of Statesboro; and Wayne Merritt of West Palm Beach, Fla. There are eight great-grandchildren to date on Mrs. Merritt's family tree. During her three years at Goodwill Nursing Home, Mrs. Merritt has remained interested in activities of her family and friends. But there is one form of entertainment she will not share with her family-- television. "She won't stay in the same room with the television on," said Mrs. Merritt's daughter-in-law. "We haven't been able to convince her that the stations carry the preaching and gospel singing that she likes. She would much rather hear it in person." Gwen Brooks I found this in my grandmother's, Polly Jones Vaughn, family Bible. Nancy C. Jones was her aunt. Nancy, b. Oct. 1875, was the daughter of Redding & Nancy Jones of Taylor Co. === ======================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be freely used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
