He and his wife, Vashti Branan, moved there before 1840. He was the son of William Montgomery and she the daughter of James and Sarah Tommey Branan of Wilkinson County. They had ten children: James, Lucinda (Carter), William, Mary (Jones), Feraby(Carter), John, Vincent, Sarah (Ricks), Sebron, and Eliza (McCrary). Samuel and Vashti are buried in a family lot on a private farm in Crowell. The family kept records of their business affairs as well as their daily lives and correspondence and microfilm of these may be found in the Georgia Archives and the Butler library.
