Samuel met and was later married to Vashti Branan there on January 25, 1824. She was the daughter of James and Sarah Tommey (Tomme) Branan. Samuel was born on March 6, 1800 and Vashti was born on April 1, 1803. Samuel was brought up in the Presbyterian Church and Vashti was reared in the Catholic Church. Around 1834, Samuel and Vashti moved to Crawford County where they reared their family. According to the family Bible and public records, the following children were born to them: 1. James (10/20/1824 – 12/10/1855) m. Harriet Martha Davis (1/20/1848, Crawford Co.) 2. Lucinda (7/31/1826 - 3/27/1912) m. Anderson Churchill Carter (10/27/1842, Crawford Co.) 3. William (6/8/1828 - 11/24/1905) m. Sarah Jane Branan 4. Mary (5/21/1830 - 6/6/1873) m. Alexander Pope Jones (8/3/1848, Crawford Co.) 5. Feraby (10/14/1832 – 7/22/1919) m. David W. Carter (2/1/1849, Crawford Co.) 6. John (1/1/1834 – 3/19/1838) 7. Vincent (1/20/1836 – 5/24/1902) m. 1) Eleanor J. Shine (3/8/1860, Taylor Co.) 2) Elizabeth Catherine Shine (1/19/1864, Taylor Co.) 8. Sarah (7/27/1837 – 8/11/1920) m. Isaac James Ricks (1/29/1862, Taylor Co.) 9. Sebron (11/21/39 - 4/4/17) m. Josephine Hayes (9/25/1861, Taylor Co.) 10. Eliza (1/19/1842 – 8/20/1899) m. William Henry McCrary (12/1/1867, Taylor Co.) Samuel and Vashti lived in the Crowell area and the land where they lived in Crawford County eventually became a part of Taylor County. Samuel died on September 1, 1872 and Vashti died on December 3, 1895. They were both buried in a family plot on a farm in Crowell. Four generations of family letters and business papers have been catalogued and microfilmed by Emory University and copies of the microfilm may be found in the Georgia Archives and the Butler library.
