Walden jdwal@gulftel.com BRITTON POPE was born in Washington County, Georgia about 1802. He was the son of WILEY POPE born about 1779 in North Carolina. WILEY POPE was an early settler of Box Springs, Georgia. Box Springs is in Talbot County, Georgia with Baker Creek on the county line with Muscogee County, Georgia; only a few miles from the city limits of Columbus, Georgia. He settled in the Lower 17th Land District of Box Springs. Wiley Pope was an early settler along with Jacob and Sarah Funderburk. Wiley Pope was the original owner of this land after the Indians were moved westward. He obtained portions of the plantation through his eligibility for land lotteries by having been a member of the military in the War of 1812. The plantation was originally in Muscogee County, Georgia. In 1847, the county line was moved to the west and most of the plantation became part of Talbot County. December 30 1857 Allen Anderson Pope b. Nov. 17, 1817. d. December 1859 (Note: This is an interpretation of the Washington Co. Ga. 1820 Census based on references listed below. The 1820 census was as follows: Wyllie Pope(head of household; males: ages 0-10 =3; 10-16=2; 16-26=1; 45+=1; females: ages 10-16=1; 45+=1 Slaves=4. One male 10-16 has not been found in the research done so far. Also, not sure who the female 45 + yrs.old is because Wylie Pope married Martha Bryan in 1833 according to marriage records in Washington Co. Ga.) 1827 Land Lottery Washington County, Georgia Floyds District: BRITTAIN POPE drew Section 2, District 14, Lot # 83 in Muscogee County, Georgia 1825, 1826, 1827 BRITTON POPE was present in the tax digest for Washington County in 1825, 1827 & 1828. He was living in Captain Jordan's Division 6. On March 6 &7 of 1827 he was listed under Floyd's District of Washington County, won 202 1/2 acres of Section 2 (Muscogee County) District 14, No. 83,in the Georgia Land Lottery of 1827. (Have a copy of this document from the POPE PLANTATION book). BRITTON POPE married MARGARET(PEGGY)JONES about 1829(no records have been located of this marriage). They had the following children: 1. William W. b. November 12, 1829 d. October 13, 1863 2. Emaline Ann b. May 7, 1831 d. April 17, 1863 3. Adaline Pope b. November 5, 1833 d. 1925 4. Cullen Andrew Jackson b. March 7, 1836 d. February 8, 1896 5. Mary b. 1840 d. unknown 6. Britton b. December 15, 1847 d. January 14, 1882 1830 BRITTON POPE was NOT listed in the Washington Co. Georgia 1830 Census or in the 1830 tax digest. WILEY POPE, Brittain's father, paid the land grant tax for his son in his own tax bill of 1830. 1830 BRITTAIN POPE is listed in Georgia for the 1830 Census in Pulaski County, Georgia in Captain Roach's District: 1 male, 20-30 yrs.old;(Britton) 1 female, 20-30 yrs.old(Margaret(Peggy); 1 male under 5 yrs.old (William); SLAVES: males 6, under 10 yrs.old; 7 were 10-24 yrs.old; 2 were 36-55 yrs.old; female slaves: 2 were under 10 yrs.old; 4 were 10-24 yrs.old; 3 were 24-55 yrs.old. The total number of slaves was 30. 1840 CRAWFORD COUNTY GEORGIA Census: BRITTON POPE(1 male 40-50 yrs. old) 1 male 60-70 yrs. old(?); 2 males 5-10 yrs. old(Cullen and Britton, Jr.); 1 female, 30-40 yrs.old(Margaret); 2 females, 5-10 yrs. old (Emaline and Adeline); 1 female under 5 yrs. old(Mary). (Janie?) 1 F BUTLER, Mary 24 1852 In 1852 BRITTAIN POPE's land grant became a part of Taylor County Ga. He lived on the original land grant but other counties were made from the original county. ABSTRACTS FROM MINUTES OF INFERIOR COURT OF TAYLOR CO. GEORGIA, December 3, 1852: (p.3) A.J. Colbert, G.F. McCrary and BRITTON POPE appointed commissioners for the next 5 years to let out bridges on Big Patsaliga Creek at John McCrarys(Crawford County extended west of Flint River to Patsaliga Creek in what is now Taylor County until about 1854 when a group of people petitioned the legislature to be added to Taylor County.) BRITTON POPE is listed as a grand juror for 1852 in Taylor Co. Ga.(Superior Court Records, Book A 1852-1866) 1853 INFERIOR COURT MINUTES OF TAYLOR COUNTY, GEORGIA. BUTLER, GEORGIA: p. 290 Cornelius Bradley sold to Robert Scandrett, land south of the Muscogee Railroad called Stage Stable Lot for $100. On Nov.14, 1853, Robert Scandrett sold the lot to BRITTON POPE for $400. Lot being bounded on the west by Jonah Hartley, South by William B. Johnson, east by Jas. B. Bartlett; north right of way of Muscogee Railroad, 1 acre. Witnesses: Jonah Hartley, Isaac Mulkey, JJC Recorded: June 12, 1854. Book A, Taylor Co. Georgia. Dec. 14, 1853 Book A Taylor Co. Georgia John B. Wright and W.J.A. Hamilton to BRITTON POPE, $500, east half Butler lot 10, Block 5 Witnesses: Jas. B. Hamilton, John A.W. McCants; Recorded: June 12, 1854 1856-57 After his father's(Wiley POPE)death in 1856, BRITTAIN POPE,the eldest son, was joined by other heirs in the filing of a Caveat in Talbot Co. Georgia against the probate of the will and codicil of WILEY POPE. The caveat was heard on February 2, 1857 in the Court of the Ordinary in Talbot County. (In Wiley Pope's will, Brittain Pope was willed six slaves whereas son, William and Allen Pope had been willed property, slaves, etc.)The caveat said that BRITTAIN POPE was certain that he should receive a large share of His father's estate, since it was well known that he was the "favorite son". It was alleged that two younger sons had influenced the senile father, Wiley. The Caveat was lost in the Ordinary Court, but was appealed by the heirs. It was heard in the Superior Court of Talbot County in March of 1857 and lost again. At this time, the will and codicil of WILEY POPE was admitted to probate in common form and duly recorded on April 21, 1857. (From A ROCKAWAY IN TALBOT, p.166). In January, 1857, Brittain Pope died at the age of abt. 55. He is buried in the POPE family cemetery in Taylor County, Georgia. His brothers, William and Allen Pope also died, William on December 30, 1857 and Allen in December 1859. After William died, Allen had married his sister-in-law, Sarah. When Allen died in 1859 Sarah Ann Pope was appointed administrator of the estate and served for twenty years or more. After BRITTON POPE'S death, the following are related to the administration of his estate: 1858 Taylor Co. Georgia Administrator and Guardian Bonds, December 1858: BRITTAIN POPE deceased, Administrators: WILLIAM W. POPE and CULLIN A.J. POPE; Bond $4000. Secretaries: William H. Caldwell, John B. Wright; James D. Tension, Robert Scandrett; Distribution of Estates Book A, p. 12 shows distribution of negro, Judy, age 22; Charles, age 5; Leuzar, age 3; Cato, age 1 to widow Peggy Pope for her natural life and on her death, revert to estate to be divided between widow's children or heirs-in-law. BRITTAIN POPE deceased p. 82 Bond: $3000; Sec. Andrew McCants and John Gray; Orphan: MARY POPE 14 yrs.old chose her Guardian: Lucius McCrary; Dec. 11, 1858 Petition of PEGGY POPE, widow of BRITTON POPE, late of said county(Taylor Co. Ga.) sheweth that he departed life the 28th of January 1857, and that WILLIAM POPE and C.A.J. POPE became the administrators.That he possessed these lands: 14th district LL 83, 78, and 45 acres off lot #82 and adjoining other said lands of said Popes and marked as follows: Beginning a corner on a white oak bush running thence north 22 chains, 50 links to a corner on a black Jack thence west 15 chains to a corner on a white oak and thence south 7 chains to a corner on a red oak thence west 7 chains,50 links to a corner on a Hickory thence 15 chains, 50 links to a corner on a post oak and thence east to the beginning corner on the above named white oak bush, Also, a lot lying near the town of Butler know as the Stage Stable lot, it being bounded on the west by J. Hartley, south by Wm. B. Johnson land and east by James Bartlett lot and north by the right of way of the Muscogee Railroad containing about 1 acre more or less. Also, another parcel of land in the town of Butler, east half of lot # 10 on Block #5 in said town being 25 feet in front and 112 feet in back. That no provision has ever been made for her dower. Commissioners named: Wm J.F. Mitchell, Peter E. Riley, Bartley McCrary, John T. Gray and Curry B. Dickson. Britton's two sons were co-administrators of his estate at the April term of the 1858 Court of the Ordinary in Taylor County. They posted bond and security of $24,000. The inventory and appraisement of the estate of BRITTAIN POPE was taken on September 11, 1858 by Bartley McCrary, L. McCrary, G. McCrary, and R. ? This was recorded on January 18, 1859. McCrary, the guardian of Mary Ann Pope from estate of deceased Britton Pope, father, to be in the hands of William W. Pope and Cullen A.J. Pope. Cullen A.J. Pope to be trustee of property who may turn it over to Charles Mulkey for the use of Mary Ann. Wit: Seaborn Mulkey, John H.
