Abt 1834, Lancaster, Lancaster, SC wife: Elizabeth d. , SC Info from:Jfhort@aol.com Jackie Horton] If you stand in Crowell Cemetery (large part) the head stone all run in a row with the ones across the street in the small cemetery and they have the same surnames. ==================== The smaller cemetery across the road is indeed part of the larger one. And you are right - the road cut right through the cemetery when it was built, as evidenced by the brick "wall" on the outer edge of the smaller one and the missing graves in the larger one. The smaller cemetery was overgrown until just a few years ago & most of the folks left around who knew the cemetery was there thought it was a colored cemetery, until it was cleaned up after we found the Griffith graves. There are a few graves of colored people on down the hill just a short distance from the Griffith graves toward the river. Five or six years ago, a guy who worked for the county & was interested in genealogy (I can't think of his name) did his thing in the smaller part & located graves upon graves upon graves over there. He had a degree in archaelogy or something like that so he knew how to do it & showed Warren some stuff. Most of them are unmarked now but I suspect the markers have just been destroyed over the years because we've found pieces all over - not enough to put anything together, except Sterling & Mary Horton & the Griffiths. He was going to do all the old country cemeteries but stuff happened in the county & he never got around to it. There are also some Northingtons buried over there too, who used to be in a fenced-in area but the fence has been destroyed. They were killed in a stagecoach wreck that happened almost right there & the family buried them there. We have never found any markers but again, I suspect they were destroyed over time & with the highway being built there.
