Mott, Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth, to whom sincere appreciation is hereby expressed. On June 15, 1838, the Brethren William Bowden and Peter Steward came forward by Church authority and constituted the following members a Church of Jesus Christ: John Hudson; Rayman Davinport; James S. Bartlett; Elizabeth Bartlett; Sarah Bauthenstine; Alby Johnson; Dorothy Bartlett; Mary Bartlett; and Elizabeth Rhodes The Church was called HOPEFUL until 3-18-1843 it was changed to Bethel. It met 12-15-1838 with Br. Peter Stewart, moderator and selected a place for building a meeting house in the N.E. corner of LL 212 in the 12th Dis. of then Marion County that was in 1852 changed to Taylor County-about 2 miles S.W. of Butler. On 2-16-1839 James S. Barlett was chosen church clerk and G.L. Taylor was chosen Pastor 6-17- 1839. On 3-14-1840 the Church agreed to write the church at Rosemary, SC to state if Br John Hudson was justified in departing from his wife and asked for a letter of recommendation from them for Baxter Boland. The Church in SC replied Bro Hudson was justified but they could not recommend Br Boland and grant him a letter of dismission. Years later, Br Hudson was excommunicated from the church for living with Nancy Battle. Later he got a divorce and legitimatized their children and married Nancy in 1859. In 1843 Br H.E. Parker acknowledged fighting after having been shamefully treated & the Church forgave him. In 1843 the Church was moved to the neighborhood of Br Wm Hurst & the next year he was chosen Clerk. On 11-8- 1844 the Brethren Philips, Hurst & Boland were appointed to sell land & house near Bartlett’s Mill that belonged to the Church. It was sold for $15 & $5 given to Sarah Watson who was later excommunicated for acting ‘disorderly’ in 1847. In 1848 the Church appointed Hurst, Willis? Watson & E.S. Loyd to procure a Title to 4 acres of land from Claudius Bynum to build a meeting house on. In 1851 Willis & Elizabeth Watson excommunicated for joining a church of another faith. In 1852 moved that the Church ‘wash feet’ every communion time & Bethursbay? Church of Marion Co requested to unite with Bethel & ‘twas granted. S.H. Dwight & James Johnson (of New Hope in Macon Co.?) asked for Andrew Hood to preach for them (one weekend a month) & it was granted as most churches had services only one weekend a month. In 1850 Baxter Boland was liberated to exercise his gift (of preaching?) in the bounds of the church. 1853 Ceasar, property of Elder Hood received into the church. In 1853 the Church brot a charge against Br Andrew Hood for visiting the Masonic Lodge (with his wife) & other charges so they left the Old Baptist Church of Bethel & a committee was appointed to ask for his preaching credentials. In 1855 Wm Hurst returned to Wm Miller a deed to meeting house? And Isaac Stanford was ordained to preach. In 1865 George Knight was liberated to exercise his gift. On 1-28-1857 moved that church be moved 1 mile SW of Butler & 5-2-1857 building committee of J.S. Bartlett, Wm Miller, Enoch Garrett, Wm Hubbard & James D. Tennison was appointed. James Tennison licensed to preach. In 1876 Martha Cook was excluded for joining the Freewill Society & 1898 Mollie (Mary) & Pearl Pierce were excluded for joining ‘the Missionaries, a disorderly body.’ Pastors & year chosen G. L.
