Herricks to Laurana Shirah. This indenture made and entered into this twenty fourth day of October Eighteen hundred and fifty nine between John F. Herricks of the County of Taylor and State aforesaid of the one part and Laurana Shirah of the County of Macon and same State of the other part, Witnesseth That for and in consideration of the sum of five hundred dollars to him the said John F. Herricks in hand paid by the said Laurana Shirah at and before the sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt hereof is hereby acknowledged Hath this day granted sold bargained and conveyed and doth by these presents grant bargain sell and convey to the said Laurana Shirah- her heirs and assigns all that tract or parcel of land lying and being situated in the twelfth (12) district of once Muscogee now Taylor County known and distinguished in the plans of said district as number one hundred and forty six (146) To have and to hold to her the said Laurana Shirah, her heirs and assigns with all and singular the rights numbers and appurtenances thereto belonging or in anywise appurtaining for her and their own proper use benefit and behoof forever in fee simple and the said John F Herricks for himself his heirs Executors and administrators will forever warrant and defend to the said Laurana Shirah her heirs Executors administrators the right and title to the above bargained premises against the claims of himself his heirs Executors and Administrators and against the claims of all other persons whatever In testimony whereof the said John F Herricks has hereunto set his hand and affixed his seal the day and year above written Signed sealed & delivered in presence of John Shirah Burwell Greene JP John Herricks (seal) Recorded April 27th 1883 JB Fowler clk Additional Comments: This deed was written in Macon County in 1859 and recorded in Taylor County, almost 24 years later in 1883.(3 years after her death) Laurana Shirah (a.k.a. Lourana Shira, Lurany Shirey) sold her Macon County property and purchased the Taylor County property the same day, October 24th 1859, and both deeds were written in Macon County. Her husband Charles Shirah died in Macon County July 15, 1849 at the age of 39. They were both from Richland County, SC and had moved to GA in the 1830's. Four of her seven sons enlisted in the 27th Georgia Infantry and all four were lost in Virginia. (Charles Jr in Richmond, Christopher at Antietam, John at Seven Pines, and Lt. James Shirah sometime after being wounded in battle at Olusteee, FL in 1864, unknown cause of death or location. Another son who lived in Taylor County was Nicholas, 64th Georgia Infantry, Co. I, survived and returned to Taylor County in 1865. Before 1870 she moved back to Richland County, SC and lived with her oldest son, Jacob C. Shirah until her death of consumption in 1880. Another son, Isaac, also lived in Richland County, SC.
