Ruffin to House & Lot in Butler. Deed Bk E p 122 This indenture made the Eighth day of January in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred (Jan 8, 1871) and Seventy between Robert Scandrett of the State of Georgia and County of Taylor of the one part and James J. Ruffin of the State of Georgia and county of Taylor of the other part' Witnesseth that the said Scandrett for and in consideration of the sum of Four Hundred Dollars to him in hand paid at and before the sealing and delivery of these presents (the receipt whereof is herwby acknowledged hat granted, bargained, sold and conveyed, and doth by these presents, grant, bargain, sell and convey unto the said Ruffin and his heirs and assignes a certain piece of ground with the improvements thereon, lying and being on the North side of the S.W. R.R. [Southwest Railroad] depot in the town of Butler and known as the Scandrett House, it being a part of Lot of land No thirty three in the fourteenth District of Taylor County containing about Three acres more or less and now enclosed by a Fence. To have and to hold the said bargained premises unto him the said Ruffin and his heirs and assigns.....Fee Simple. and the said Scandrett for himself, heirs, etc. will warrant and forever defend the right and title thereof..... In testimony whereof the said Scandrett hat hereunto set his hand and offered his seal the day and year first above written. Robert Scandrett In presence of: Z.R. Rucker, James M. Bateman J.P. Recorded Oct 15, 1873 Additional Comments: Robert A. Scandrett born 1812 (Ulster Ireland) - died 1873/4 (61 years old) from Wife's obit. 4-3-1856 was marriage of Robert to Susan Smead Harris. (Taylor Co) The house was north of the RR station, and with a fence around it, must have been quite nice. This same time period, J.J. was beginning his Mercantile/Grocery business in Butler across from the Courthouse. Robert Scandrett was involved with numerous Land purchases and sales.
