Letter from James Branan To Eliza Montgomery 24 Nov 1864 Taylor Co, GA (Letter to Eliza Montgomery, daughter of Samuel and Vashti Branan Montgomery of Taylor County, formerly of Wilkinson County) Macon Ga Nov the 24th 1864 Miss Elizar Montgomery Dear Cousin: I received your kind letter of the 11st inst. And was more that glad to hear from you and to hear that you was well Your very kind letter found me well Cousin I have been in one fight since I wrote to you in a few days after I wrote to you the Regiment left macon and sent to lovejoy station Near Atlanta and stayed there one day and then we was ordered back to macon and we had to march very had to keep the yankes from getting her first they got her first but they was enough troops here to keep them from takeing the place tho as soon as we got here we followed th yanks on down to griswollville and there they gave us fight they was in the town an as soon as soon as they seen us a coming they set fire to the varn and burnt it up they had burnt every thing els up before we got there and then we followed them on down a mile and half below town and there they formed a line of battle and we advanced to them about too oclock and the fith also comenced at that time an was very heavy untill night we had a heap killed an wounded they was 4 of our Co. Wounded the yankes is down about our home I cant here nothing from home at all it is supposed that we will leave here in a few days Cousin Hershel Etheridge is not in the same Co. That I am he is at home now tho so nothing more at present your affectionate loveing Cousin James T.
