Letter from J. J. Watson to Penney Amerson 08 Nov 1864 Taylor County, GA Cornith, Mississippi November 8th, 1864 Miss Penney Amerson My Dear Miss I seat myself this morning to answer your kind and affectionate letter which I received at Montgomery on the 29th of Oct. I was truly glad to hear from you but was sorry to hear you was sick with the chills. These few lines leaves me well in health but troubled in mind. Miss Penney I would have written you before now but I have been traveling ever since the 29th day of Oct. I was on the boat when I got you letter. I did not have time to answer it nor I have not been still long enough at one time to write a letter untell now. I thought I would write you a few lines to let you know where I am and where I am going to be. It is 60 miles from here to the army. The army is at Tuscomba, Ala. That is 40 miles from home. When I get there I think I will go home if I can get there but I dont know what the army is doing. I am going on to the command tomorrow. I stopt in Cornith to write back to you and they dont any mail go any further up the road than this place. Miss Penney I am mighty sorry that I am getting so far away that I cant write back to you but I cant help it as I have to go where I am ordered. I hope the time is not far distant when I can have the pleasure of coming to see you again. You said you thought that I was taking on about some young lady in Georgia. I am indeed. You also said you wanted to know her name. Her name is Miss Penney and I want you to do all you can for me in that respect as I dont expect to get to come to see you any more until this war is over but then I hope to meet you again and never to part again as I have made up my mind to marry when this war is over and I hope I shall find you single and willing to go with me to Tennessee and spend the remainder of this short life in happiness. If I could make you happy I know I would be one of happyst men in the world. Miss Penney I will have to quit my letter as I have not time to write any more at this time. I will write soon again when I get to the army and find out all about it. I am sorry I cant write more but I am ordered to take charge of some prisoners and I have to start with them in one hour. So nothing more only remains your devoted lover. You need not write any more until I write again and let you know how to direct you letters. So farewell Miss until I hear from you again J. J. Watson your loving friend. ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
