King, one of the Justices of the Peace in and for the said County, Josephine Layfield, who, after being sworn according to law, deposes and says that she is the widow of John Layfield, deceased, who was a private in Captain Jordan Wilchar’s Company (F), in the Twenty-seventh Regiment, Georgia Volunteers, commanded by Col. Levi B. Smith, in the service of the Confederate States, in the present war with the United States: that the said husband, John Layfield, entered the service at Griffin, in the State of Georgia and County of Spalding, on the 20th day of September 1861, was wounded in the Battle of Seven Pines, Va. And died in the Fourth Georgian Hospital, in Richmond, Virginia on the nineteenth day of June 1863. That she makes this deposition for the purpose of obtaining from the Government of the Confederate States, whatever may have been due the said John Layfield, at the time of his death, for pay, bounty, or other allowances, for his services as private aforesaid. Josephine Layfield (her mark) Sworn to and subscribed before me Thomas R. King, J.P. And on the same day and year aforesaid, also appeared before me, a Justice of the Peace as aforesaid, James F. Shepherd, who is well known to me, and whom I hereby certify to be a man of veracity and credibility, who being by me duly sworn, says on oath that he is well acquainted with Josephine Layfield the claimant, and well knew for four years, John Layfield, the deceased soldier here mentioned, and that the statements made under oath by the said Josephine Layfield, claimant, as to her relationship to the said deceased soldier are true and correct in every particular, to the best of his knowledge and belief, and that he, the said James F. Shepherd is wholly disinterested. James F. Shepherd Sworn to and subscribed before me Thomas R. King, J.P. State of Georgia Taylor County Know all men by these presents, that I, Josephine Layfield, of the said County and State, for good causes and considerations me thereunto proving, have made, ordained and appointed, and by these presents do make, ordain and appoint Willis McLendon of the County and State aforesaid, my true and lawful Attorney-in-fact for me and in my name, and for my own proper use and benefit, to demand, collect and receive from the Government of the Confederate States, whatever of pay, bounty, or other allowances may have been due my late husband, John Layfield, deceased, at the time of his death, for military service rendered said Government. And in my name, or otherwise, to give proper acquittance or receipts for the sums so collected by him, and to do all other things whatsoever, that may be found necessary or proper in the execution of this Power-of-Attorney. Ratifying and confirming, and by these presents allowing whatsoever my said Attorney shall, in my name or otherwise, lawfully do or cause to be done, in and about the premises, by virtue of these presents. State of Georgia Taylor County I hereby certify that Thomas R. King, before who the foregoing Affidavit and Power-of- Attorney of Josephine Layfield and the Affidavit of James F. Shepherd appears to have been made and whose genuine signature is subscribed thereto, was, at the time of making and signing the same, a Justice of the Peace in and for the said County and State, duly commissioned and sworn, and to all of whose official acts, as such, full faith and credit is, and ought to be given as well in the Courts of Justice as thereout.
