William was the son of Levin and Lucretia Layfield. He was born January 8, 1835, in Talbot County, Ga. and died in 1929 in Calhoun County, Florida. William married Susan Williams on January 1, 1854 in Taylor County, Georgia. According to pension records, the family moved to Florida in 1897. Layfield, do hereby make application to the State Board of Pensions, for a pension to be granted me under the act of 1907, Chapter 5600 of the Laws of the State of Florida, upon the following grounds: I enlisted and served in the Co. F, 27th Regt., Ga Vols. service of the Confederate States during the war between the States of the United States, and that I did not desert the Confederate or State service; that I was honorably discharged or surrendered; I was discharged at the surrender; that I was a bona-fide citizen of this State for ten years prior to the date of this application and have been continuously since a citizen of the State of Florida, and that I am 73 years old and was shot in the mouth and the bullet came out near my ear it knocked out my teeth on upper jaw on that side and bork (broke?) a good many bone in my head. I further represent to the State Board of Pensions that I am not receiving a pension from any other State. Not any other 8. Give the name of your captain at the time of your discharge from the service. Frank Waters 9. Give the name of your battalion or regimental commander both at time of your enlistment and discharge from service. Col. Zacriah 10. When and in what campaigns did you render regular military service? From 1861 to 1865 11. If you enlisted in the navy give name of your commanding officer, date of enlistment and place of service. Was not in the navy 12. If discharged prior to the termination of the war, state place and cause of discharge. Discharged at close of the war. 13. If you lost an eye or limb during your service in the war, state when and where and in what engagement you sustained such an injury. Did not lose any limb or eye (received injury in head resulting in deafness in one ear) 15. If you received a wound during your service in the war, which permanently disables you, state when and where you received the wound. At Seven Pines, Va. Don’t know the date. (but received the wound in the head) 16. Describe the wound and state how it affects you. Was shot in the mouth and came out near (or ear). Physically all over my body. Waters, who being duly sworn deposes and says, that he was a Lieutenant in Co. F, 27th Regt. of Georgia Vols. the organization to which the within named applicant for pension under the laws of Florida belonged and in which he served during the war between the States at the time of the honorable discharge - surrender of the applicant. This deponent further says that the said W.H. Layfield rendered faithful service as a Confederate soldier or sailor and personally knows that the applicant was honorably discharged on the 26th day of April 1865 on account of surrender. Jinks and who being by me duly sworn, depose and say, each for himself, that he is a citizen of the County of Taylor in the State of Ga. and that he was a soldier in the service of the Confederate States during the war between the States, and that the said W.H. Layfield was a member of Co. F., 27th Ga regiment; that he is acquainted with W.H. Layfield, the applicant named in the foregoing petition for a pension; that he knows of his knowledge that the said W.H. Layfield rendered the service as soldier or sailor for the Confederate States during the war between the States as set forth in the foregoing petition for a pension. That he did not desert the Confederate service, and that the disability claimed by him to exist, does in fact exist and prevents him from earning a livelihood for himself and these deponents being further sworn true answer to make to the following questions, deposes each for himself and answers as follows: 1. Layfield who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is 74 years of age, having been born on the 8th day of January, 1835 in the county of Talbot, in the State of Georgia. That he is a bona fide citizen of the county of Calhoun, State of Florida. That he has resided in the State of Florida continuously since 1897. That he is the identical person who enlisted in Taylor County, Ga. under the name of William H. Layfield in July or August 1861, in Company F, Regiment 27th of the State of Georgia in the service of the Confederate States of America and who was HONORABLY DISCHARGED at Company Shops in the State of North Carolina, on the 1st of May, 1865, on account of end of war. That I served faithfully until HONORABLY DISCHARGED from the service of the Confederate States of America in the year 1865, and did not desert the service of the Confederate States of America nor take the oath of allegiance to the United States until after the surrender of the Confederate Armies. That I was at Company Shops NC at the close of the war. That I do not own property, including real estate, personal property, stocks, bonds, mortgages or other collateral securities of any kind in this or any other State, nor does my wife own with me jointly or separately property to exceed to value the sum of five thousand dollars. Bridges and Dr. G. Crozier both well known to me to be reputable physicians and each for himself deposes and says that the above applicant for increase in pension has been examined by him and that said applicant by reason of disease, injuries or age is unable to earn a livelihood by manual labor. That the applicant is 76 years old, was shot in Confederate War in the mouth and left jaw broken all to pieces and has (not ?) healed yet. His sight and hearing is very near gone. This applicant also suffers with chronic ? Rheumatism and is unable to earn a livelihood by manual labor by reason of such disease or diseases above mentioned.
