Muskets (Altered) Bayonets attached. Two (2) Companies are armed with the Windsor Musket & Bayonets (The model 1861 Windsor musket fired a .58 caliber bullet and each soldier carried about 60 rounds of ammunition.) Two (2) Companies are armed with the Whitney Musket & bayonets. (Whitney Enfield Rifle Musket – Less than a year before the outbreak of hostilities, Mississippi contracted with Northern armsmaker Eli Whitney of New Haven, Connecticut, for delivery of some 2,000 of these .58 caliber rifle muskets. Other Southern States purchased an unknown number of Whitney Enfields before May 1861, when Federal intervention finally halted the illicit arms trade.) Two (2) Companies are armed with Harper’s Ferry Rifle, one with Bayonets attached & one without. (U. S. Model 1855 Rifle – "Harpers Ferry" Rifle – Confederate troops captured hundreds of these well-crafted .58 caliber rifles when they seized the U. S. Armory at Harpers Ferry in 1861. The single-shot, muzzleloading weapon weighed just over 10 pounds and was seven inches shorter than its rifle musket predecessor. It was fitted with the Maynard tape primer percussion system.) The following was taken from the Georgia Secretary of State Web Page. http://www.sos.state.ga.us/archives/what_do_we_have/ online_records/enlistments/searchKeywords.aspx Confederate Enlistment Oaths and Discharges Private Charles Amerson of Co. F, 5th Regiment Georgia State Troops enlisted October 18, 1861 for six months. He was born in Salem District of South Carolina. He was sixty years old, 5 feet 5 inches high, fair complexion, gray eyes and gray hair when he enlisted he was a farmer. On February 3, 1862 he was examined by Thomas J. Young, Surgeon 2nd Regiment, 1st Brigade. I have carefully examined Charles Amerson of Captain May’s company, and find him incapable of performing the duties of a soldier, because of old age and chronic rheumatism which together entirely incapacitates him from performing the duties of a soldier and in my opinion he will be unfit for duty during enlistment and recommend his discharge. There was also a hand written Discharge dated December 17, 1861 for James A. Boothe of the same Company. His Discharge stated that he was born in Jones Co., Ga., 45 years of age, five feet eight inches high, fair complexion, blue eyes, gray hair, and a farmer. For the last 30 days he has been unfit for duty, he is diseased having vertigo and at times aberration of mind. He is unfit for duties as a soldier because of epilepsy which at times deprive him of use of his mind and his age is such and the disease of such a character which in all probability is incurable caused by excessive intemperate habits for a long time. Louis Poullan, Surgeon, 5th Regiment Georgia State Troops. The Georgia State Troops were volunteer soldiers in state (rather than Confederate) service from October, 1861 to April, 1862 as defenders of the Georgia coast. Many companies enlisted as a unit in the Confederate army after their six-month term in the Georgia State Troops ended.
