RUFFIN, aged thirty- three years, a resident of the county and state aforesaid, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical JAMES J. RUFFIN, who was Sargent in the Company, commanded by ALEXANDER RUSSELL (Captain) in the Regiment commanded by ROBERT V. HARDEMAN in the war against the CREEK INDIANS in the year A.D. 1836. That he went into the Service about the middle of June (to the best of his memory) A.D. 1836 for the term of three months and continued in actual service in said war for about fifteen days and was discharged on furlough on account of sickness and that the Company was discharged and disbanded before he got well enough to return to the services. He received his furlough at Camp Georgia in the State of Alabama near Columbus, Georgia, on or about the first of July 1836 to the best of his recollection. He has lost or mislaid his furlough so that he cannot find it. His service will appear by the muster rolls of said company. He makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the bounty land to which he may be entittled uder the act granting bounty land to certain officers an dsoldiers who have been engaged in the military service of the United States passed September 28, 1850. He states further that he was drafted in MONROE County, State of Georgia. Jas J. Ruffin Sworn to and subscribed before me the day and year above written. McDuffie ===========Act approved March 3rd, 1855 for Additional BOUNTY LAND===== County of Marion State of Georgia April 28, 1855 On this twentyeighth day of April, A.D. one thousand eight hundred and fifty five personally appeared before me, a Justice of the Peace, withing and for the county aforesaid, James J. RUFFIN, aged forty years, a resident of SUMPTER COUNTY,in the State of Georgia, who being duly sworn, according to law, declares that he is the identical James J. RUFFIN, who was the 4th Sargent in the Company commanded by Captain Alexander Russell in the Drafted Regiment of Infantry commanded by Colonel Robert V. Hardeman in the War with Creek Indians in the year 1836 for the term of three months and continued in actual service in said War for the term of about six weeks, that he has heretofore made application for Bounty Land under the Act of 28, Sept 1850, and received Land Warrant ____, for forty acres which he has since legally disposed of, and cannot now return. He makes this Declaration for the purpose of obtaining the additional Bounty Land to which he may be entitled under the Act approved March 3rd, 1855. He also decalres that he has never applied for not received, under this or any other Act of Congress any Bounty Land Warrant except the one above mentioned. He hereby appoints George W. McDuffie, of the county of Marion and State of Georgia, his true and lawful Attorney, with powers of substitution, to prosecute this his claim for land; to receive the Certificate or Warrant when issued, and to do all other acts necessary and proper in the premises. Jas. J Ruffin We, James Fulford and William M. Shipp, residents of Marion County, upon our oaths, declare that the foregoing Declaration was signed and acknowledged by james J. Ruffin in our presence. William Dowd, JP, Justice of Peach [maybe this one didn't go through, as he reapplied under the same Act July 31, 1872] County of Taylor - State of Georgia APPLICATION FOR BENEFITS under Law passed ACT OF 1855 Date of application July 31, 1872 On this thirty first day of July A.D. 1872, before me, the undersigned, a Justice of the Peace, duly authorized by law to administer oaths within and for the county and state aforesaid, personally appeared JAMES J. RUFFIN, age 58 years, a resident of Butler, in the county of Taylor and State of Georgia, who being duly sworn according to law declares that he is the identical James J. Ruffin who was a private drafted in the company C commanded by Captain Alexander Ruffsee in the ______ Regiment of Georgia Troops commanded by Col Robert Hardeman in the War of 1836 against the CREEK INDIANS for the term of three months and continued in actual service in said war for the term of fourteen days; that he has heretofore made application for Bounty Land uner the Act approved march 3, 1855, and obtained a Land Warrant for 40 acres, No (not remembered) He makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the Additional Bounty Land to which he may be entitled under the act approved March 3rd, 1855. He also declares that he has not received or appllied for Bounty Land under this or any other Acto of Congress, except the one above mentioned. He hereby appoints William R. Drinkard of the city of Washington D.C. his true and lawful attorney, with power of substitution, to prosecute this his claim for land to receive the Certificate or Warrant when issued, and to do all other acts necessary and proper in the premises. [Based on Pension Application below, believe he received 120 acres from this Bounty Land application] =================== APPLICATION FOR PENSION Act Approved July 28, 1892 Declaration for Indian War Survivor's Pension Under Act granting Pensions to the Survivors of the Black Hawk War, Creeek War, Cherokee Disturbances and the Seminole War State of Georgia County of Taylor (Sept 16, 1892) On this 16th day of Sept, one thousand eight hundred and niney two, personally appeared before me a Justice of Superior Court, duly authroized to administer oaths within and for the county, James J. Ruffin, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical person of the above name who was enrolled on or about June 1836, in Capt Russell's Co. commanded by Colonel Hardeman, regt of Drafted men from the county of MONROE, in the war with the Indians, known as Creek War, and served at least 30 days, and was honorably discharged at Columbus, on or about July 1836. That he is now 77 years of age, having been born on the 14th Nove 1814. That he has never applied for pension under application; that he has received a land warrante for 40 and 120 acres. That since leaving the service this applicant has resided in the State of Georgia, and his occupation has been that of a Farmer and Merchant; that prior to his entry into the service above named, his occupation was that of a Farmer. He hereby appoints with full power of substitution, A.W. BALLEW of Rome, GA his true and lawful attorney to prosecute his claim.
