“Taylor County Boys Down On The Rhine”

Nechenich, Germany
Feb. 28, 1919

Butler Herald:

Please allow me space in your dear old paper as I am in Germany, down on the
Rhine with the famous 3rd Division.  As I was one of the lucky ones to be
assigned to the 3rd U.S. Regular Army Division.  The first seven divisions are
composed of the Army of Occupation, with much pleasure to me to be with the 3rd
Division.  But believe me it don’t take no mama’s baby to be here but as I was a
great hand for sport, this life down on the Rhine suits me.

I spent about one month pleasantly in France.

During my time in France I visited many cities and I found it to be like other
counties, you can’t see anything unless you look for it.

H.C. Walker and Thomas Carson have been with me most of the time.  We have seen
sights that will never be forgotten.

Speaking of France being noted for having pretty women, we have some very good
looking women in Neckenich.  They look like a real American girl, just a little
different lingo, but I have just about gotten to where I can speak German very
well and have gotten to where I can hardly speak English.

H.C. Walker, Thomas Carson and myself are staying here and letting home-sick
boys go back to bone dry states.
