N. Benns, Editor and Proprietor of The Butler Herald) The Butler Herald, June 23, 1885, page 3, Presented online by the Digital Library of Georgia A Visit to the Country Through the kindness of Rev. J. T. Adams, we spent a very pleasant day on Sunday last in the southern portion of this county, near the line of Taylor and Schley counties. One-and-a-half miles east of Stewart’s mill, is found a very comfortable little school house without even name or nature, but around which are found many prosperous, intelligent and hospitable people. Rev. Mr. Adams preached an interesting sermon on Saturday night and also on Sunday morning to an appreciative congregation. A Sabbath school at the place above named has recently been organized and the exercises on Sunday morning were very interesting – the children we found to be intelligent and well-behaved, the parents manifested great interest in the welfare of their community. The indications are very favorable and an effort will probably be made before the close of the year to erect a more comfortable building and establish a Methodist church at this place with Rev. Mr. Adams, as their pastor, who now occupies the third Sunday in each month. As we have said, we found the people clever and in a prosperous condition. Spending Saturday night with the family of Mr. Jas. H. Giles, we were most pleasantly situated and well entertained. To Mr. and Mrs. Giles, we return thanks for their kindness. We learn from them there is a great deal of sickness in the community of a dysentery character. At the home of Mr. A. L. Duke, where we enjoyed an excellent dinner on Sunday, we were reminded of the days long ago. There the old loom stands, occupying a prominent corner, with its harness in perfect trim and its sickle ready for motion. Be it said to the honor of Mr. and Mrs. Duke, they live in good old homespun style and enjoy the fruits of their labor. We were shown by Mr. Duke, a block of wood selected from a China tree now lying on a sand-bar on Cedar Creek which has been petrified for more than thirty years. Crops and especially that of corn, between Butler and Cedar Creek, where they have been properly worked are remarkably good and look pleasing to the eye. Mr. C. J. Peterman and Mr. John Childers have splendid crops of both corn and cotton; in fact our farmers should all feel very much encouraged with their present prospects. The Butler Herald, Tuesday, December 11, 1888, page 3 Personal and Otherwise Mr. James Henry Giles, an industrious farmer of the southern portion of this county has moved his family to Columbus. The Butler Herald, April 14, 1891, page 3 Town and Country Mrs. G. A. Giles is visiting the family of Mr. T. F. Layfield. The Butler Herald, January 3, 1911, page 3 Local Paragraphs The friends of Mr. James H. Giles will be pleased to know that he expects to move his family to Butler in the near future. The Butler Herald, March 14, 1911, page 3 Local Paragraphs Mrs. J. H. Giles has the sympathy of her many friends in her illness. She has been confined to her room for the past three weeks. We were glad to learn on yesterday of her improved condition. The following were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Giles last week: Mrs. S. J. Layfield, of Ft. Valley, Mrs. Tommie Thompson and Mrs. Lena Jordan, of Charing; Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Joiner, of Howard. The Butler Herald, March 21, 1911, page 3 Mrs. T. F. Layfield and Mrs. J. H. Giles, mention of whose illness was made last week, are both improving. Card of Thanks We take this method of thanking the dear people of Butler and vicinity for their many acts of kindness to us during the recent illness of Mrs. Giles. May God’s richest blessings rest upon you all. Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Giles The Butler Herald, March 28, 1911, page 3 Local Paragraphs We regret to learn that James Edwin, the 8 months old son of Mr. and Mrs. Tommie Childers, is seriously ill at the home of its grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James H. Giles in this city. The Butler April 11, 1911, page 3 Death of a little Child Mr. and Mrs. J. Tom Childers have the sympathy of their many friends in the death of their only child, James Edwin, age eight months. The brightness of its eyes, the pink of its cheeks and its cooings all indicated that the child was of unusual health and sunny nature until overtaken by disease about three weeks ago while with its parents was visiting at the home of the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Giles in this city where Saturday night it breathed its last and its soul returned to God who gave it. The remains were interred in the cemetery at Bethel church Sunday morning midst a large gathering of sorrowing friends. Rev. J. T. Adams performing the burial service. The Butler Herald, April 18, 1911, page 3 Mr. James H. Giles informs us that his oat crop will be a complete failure. He says he had a fine stand of oats some weeks ago and they were growing off nicely, and later upon examination he found that an insect, entirely unknown to him, had covered the field and was sapping the life out of the plant which was dying at a rapid rate. A field near him, Mr. Giles says, seems not at all affected, while another is like unto his own.
