Editor: I suppose it is about time to air my intellect again and I will just usurp a small space in the Herald in order to accomplish that very important design. There is nothing in the “Star State” that would interest the average “goober grabbler” about this time unless it be the fact we have the best crops since 1882 and equally as good as they were then. The cotton crop is simply unusual. The health of the country is good and all in pretty fair spirits considering the low price of cotton and all other products of the farm. It is almost impossible to rent land here; there being more renters than places. Politics are pretty warm, but nothing like it has been, the primaries are over, the state convention will come off next week and then the democrats know what is next, hence the greatest excitement will be over as the populists do not “cut much figure” in this part of the country. Protracted meetings are the order of the day now, one under the auspices of the Cambellites church is in progress at this place now. We are unable to the present writing to note any results either good, bad, or indifferent. Mr. Thomas J. Saxon formerly of Taylor County, Ga., now citizen of this place had his barn burned with 40 tons of baled hay in it last week. Mr. Robert T. Wilchar, formerly of Taylor County, now a citizen of Parker County, Texas, was visiting friends at this place, Ennis and Rice Texas last week. Bob was quite a lad when we saw him last but now we notice silver threads among the black. Old age will creep on apace; even we begin to feel the cares of time. To Elder B. Stewart – Suppose you give us a list of appointments in Texas; there are a great many relatives and friends in Texas who would welcome you and would like so much to see you and hear you preach; come. It is indeed very warm this afternoon and we are out of material to continue this scribble so we will “sign her up.” J.
