Hill and Rogers Seriously Wounded in Difficulty at Rupert As a result of a dispute which arose between Mr. Slaughter Hill, age 55, and Matthew Rogers, age 35, at the store of Mr. Tom Cochran Wednesday night about 7 o’clock both men are confined to their rooms, the former from the effect of a pistol ball in his left lung and the latter from many gashes of a pocket knife about the body. While rumors that both men would probably die from their injuries have been freely circulated it was learned yesterday that the chances were much more in their favor than at any time since the difficulty. While Mr. Hill, his two sons and his son-in-law were together at the Cochran store, a dispute, it is said, started between Mr. Hill and Matthew Rogers, another customer of the store who was present at that time. Licks were passed between the two, when the two sons of Mr. Hill and Mr. Aultman all engaged in the melee. The only witnesses to the affair were Mr. Carl Rigsby and Mr. Cochran. No one seems to know who shot Mr. Hill or in whose hands was the knife when Mr. Rogers was cut. However, the community has been very much stirred up over the affair since its occurance, and the friends of both gentlemen who were so seriously wounded are rejoicing to learn of their favorable condition.
