Frierson is seriously ill. Mr. W.J. Eubanks breathed his last at his father’s home in Taylor County, March the 24th, 1886. Dr. A.B. Couch of Reynolds returned from Southwest Georgia last week accompanied by his family. It is a sad thought, but the 26th day of April will not be observed as a memorial day by our people. The contract for repairing the woodwork on the courthouse building has been let to Mr. Russ Stringfield, a competent workman. At his home in this county, on Wednesday morning last, occurred the death of Mr. W.T. Newman, in the 29th year of his age. Mr. L.B. Lucas while plowing one day last week happened to a serious accident. His plow caught under a root, which caused the handle to strike him on the side, breaking one of his ribs. Colbert left last Sunday for their future home in Florida, carrying with them best wishes of their many friends. On last Saturday evening the splendid sawmill of Messrs. Dasher & McCants, located a few miles northeast of Butler was set on fire by an incendiary and before assistant arrived the whole premises were in a blaze. The mill and fixture consisting of an engine, saw, plainer matcher and other machinery, all of which were comparatively new, and said to be the best in the county, was seriously damaged, and it is estimated that about 110,000 feet of excellent lumber was burned. There was no insurance on the property, and Messrs. Dasher & McCants estimate their loss to be between fifteen hundred and two thousand dollars. We regret to loose our worthy correspondent, Mr. P.B. Griffith, of Reynolds who has accepted a position with Mr. P.M. Adams of Brunswick. We regret to state that Mrs. Dr. J.W. Bullock is seriously ill. Mr. C.T. Waters and family of LaGrange, have removed to Butler. Mr. S.L. Fleming will sing the second Sabbath in every month at the Murray schoolhouse. Three negro men are confined in our jail, two for stealing chickens, and one for carrying concealed weapons. We have been informed that Rev. W.A. Harris, of Columbus, will preach the commencement sermon of Butler Female College on Sunday June 20th. Mrs. Farnum, mother of Mrs. J.L. Parker, has been seriously ill for several days. Miss Nora Riley, who is teaching an interesting school at Howard visited friends in Butler last Saturday. We regret to learn that Mr. Tellie Montgomery, son of Mr. Seaborn Montgomery, living near Howard, happened to a sad misfortune on Thursday last by having his residence and its entire contents destroyed by fire. A tremendous gully north of the public square was a favorite resort with some of young men last Saturday, during the storm. It is said that a few prayers were also offered. Mr. Charlie Caldwell has been quite sick with rheumatism for several days at the residence of his mother in this place. At the residence of the bride’s mother Mrs. Eliza Rhodes at 10 o’clock a.m., on Sunday the 23rd inst., C.M. Bartlet to Miss Lena Rhodes, Elder J.G. Murray officiating. T.F. Layfield, the efficient section master between Butler and Howard happened to a painful accident last week in some way his left foot was caught under a handcar and severely mashed. Mr. Layfield we regret to say will be forced to wear crutches for several days.
