By One Present The Butler Herald Tuesday, February 18, 1913 Page Two Valentine Bridge Party Given By Mrs. Whatley St. Valentine’s Day coming during Lent precludes any brilliant social welcome in the way of Valentine balls, but the many small affairs of the week have been characterized by the insignia of cupid. The chief social event of today was Mrs. Robert Whatley’s evening bridge party, which was a pretty (paper blurred) affair. The pretty home was beautifully decorated for the occasion with quantities of cut flowers, ferns and numbers of softly shaded lights. The reception hall with the rich green foliage plants in artistic arrangement, with golden daffodils and fragrant narcissus presented a bower of beauty to the guest as they arrived. The table in the dining room from which salads, cakes and ices were served and upon which the tea urn was placed had a floral centerpiece an oblong basket filled with red roses and hyacinths, the curving handle tied with red tulle. Around the centerpiece were candlesticks holding tapers bearing white crystal shades and silver and crystal dishes holding white and red shaped confections. The scorecards bore cupids and hearts and in various other pretty details court was paid to St. Valentine, the god of social events in February as well as of love. Miss Eva McDaniel presided at the punch bowl serving the refreshing nectar from a violet wreathed crystal bowl. Benns and (paper torn) Moulton, at the home of the former on Thursday evening, Feb. 13th. Although the sleet and rain began falling about twilight, the elements threatening a steady downpour, yet fortune favored the anxious guests and still more anxious hostesses, so that quite a number were brave enough to face the weather. On arriving however, at the brilliant illuminated home, with its cheery fires and cosey corners, they soon forgot all unpleasantries and began turning their thoughts into other channels, of joy, good will and cheer. Hearts hung in profusion from curtains and portiers, and were conspicuous among the floral decorations of narcissus, buttercups and daffodils. Quite a flutter of hearts was caused, when Mrs. Moulton, petite and graceful in a becoming gown of toupe crepe-de-chine with a touch of black velvet, began distributing the heart shaped scorecards, with a request that all write an original Valentine either comic or sentimental. Little red and white mints were served in cut glass dishes from the three connecting parlors. The other refreshments were for first course, gelatine and whipped cream, garnished with cherries and served with heart shaped cakes. Second course, hot coffee and saltine wafers. Unique little cupids and arrows were the favors. Mrs. Julian Edwards rendered some beautiful piano selections, which were greatly enjoyed as was the music by the young ladies and gentlemen. Mrs. Benns and Mrs. Moulton were assisted in entertaining by Mrs. Geo. Hanson, Mrs. T.W. Pool and Miss Hortense Davant. Before departing the original Valentines were ready by Mrs. Benns causing much amusement to the merry crowd. She was daintily gowned in a lingerie dress over rose pink lining with a dresden sash in pink.
